CA resident buying while out of state.

Hello people,
I'm a San Diegan who grew up in Minneapolis and I will be going back there this summer to visit my parents and siblings. While there, can I purchase a gun? I'm interested in the HK 416 pistol and I know I can't buy them here, but I figured I might be able to buy one and leave it at my parents house in Minnesota. Is this legal?
Also, if I CAN buy one, is it possible for ME to alter it in such a way that I can legally import it to CA (obviously thru a CA FFL)?
On the other hand, can I have a Minnesota resident buy it, alter it, THEN legally import it to me in San Diego thru a CA FFL?
I saw the other thread similar to this one, but I didn't want to derail that fellow's thread with my question dealing with the out of state issues.
I know this is a lot of questions, but all I hear in this state is what I CAN'T DO or CAN'T BUY that I guess I want to see if I can take advantage of my out of state connections.

Legally, no you could not buy it and bring it back home. But you have 2 available options, Intra-familial Transfer or Dimensionally Compliant Single-shot Exemption.

For an Intra-familial Transfer, your parents could buy it and ship it to a FFL in CA who would transfer it to you. They need to know about Intra-familial Exemptions to the roster though. Or you could have a 07FFL modify one into a Dimensionally Compliant Single-shot Exempt form. Check the thread in the handgun forum for all the details.

Buy the looks of it this pistol should be able to have a standard AR style Bullet Button installed. That is good new for you.

Sense your parents are still living in MN the best option for you would be to do an intrafamiliar transfer.

Step one: have your parent buy one with 10 round magazines.

Step two: visit your parents this summer with a BB in hand.

Step three: while there install the BB to make it CA compliant.

Step four: have your parents ship this; as a GIFT to you with a letter saying such, to a ffl in the SD area that will do the transfer for you. BTW you might want to line up thie ffl before you go.

Step five: return to CA and visit the ffl to do the DROS.

Step six: return to ffl in 10 24 hour waiting periods and take home your new HK 416.

Step seven: Have fun

Your Dad doesn't have to buy it; but he needs to give it to you to qualify for the Intrafamiliar transfer rule.

The SSE thread is the first thread in the handgun section and explains how the single shot exemption works.

So, in MN; and most free states, your friend could buy the gun and give it to your father as a gift. Your father could then give it to you as a gift.

If your friend or father doesn't like that idea you could still just have you friend buy it and sell it to you as a single shot exempt pistol. Follow my step by step instructions with these changes:

When you install the BB convert a magazine to 0 rounds and install it too before your friend ships the pistol.

And, you no longer need the gift letter.
