a 10-22 is a rifle that everyone should have

though I wanted to get the 10-22 newbies hooked and not scare them off

There are 10/22 Glass Bedding Kits or you can do your own with JB Weld. A decent Bedding will make that M1 Kit hit the Bullseye.

Haha yeah...for me it was like $350 for just the taxes and fees.

Whatever you do ... do NOT go to rimfirecentral and check out the 10/22 Ultimate section. This is what I did and my first 10/22 cost nearly $2k

Ok, picked it up today, came home and installed it in the M-1 Carbine stock I received yesterday. Fit in fine, when installing the sling it was a little tight, but it fit. The only problem was the stock was missing the butt plate. Emailed Centerfire Systems and they would send me out one right away. Now I can't wait to go shoot it. Oh, it did come with a weaver mount, so might toss a red dot if I don't go for the tech sights.

I'm looking for a 10/22 i can practice my marksmanship with.

                        Is a bull barrel necessary?

For plinking I would say no.

If you are planning on shooting paper you may want to change out the barrel.
