What .22 for long range?

+1 on the Savage MKII-BTVS for a bolt action. For a semi auto, Volquartsen makes one of the best rim fires on the market with dozens of options for barrels, stocks, and finishes. If we were talking about centerfires I might agree with this, but for the most part, the limiting factor with rimfires is the ammunition itself... you are at the mercy of the manufacturer to provide consistent ammo. Sure, there is "match" ammo like the SK, Wolf, FGMM, etc.... but you pay darned near centerfire prices for it and is still not what precision loaded centerfire ammo is.

Both of my 22's (a full KIDD rifle and a Ruger with a KIDD lightweight barrel) will shoot better than I can, providint consistent groups in the 1's and 2's at 50 yards and right around .750" 5 shot groups at 100. You maaaaay see slightly better groups out of something like an Anshutz but you will pay top dollar for it and loose that oh so fun semi auto, lead slinging ability.

I shoot LR rifle out to 900 with my 308 and have found that the .22 is a great training tool. Scale down your targets and place them out to 150 or 200 if you have nice conditions. On a nice day with good ammo, you will be surprised how well a .22 hangs at 200 yards!!! Once you know your drops and have the wind dialed, it is a very doable thing.

First of all,
You want to go for the really nice bull barrel with the tight chamber.
My favorite is green mountain bull barrel 20"....
I did half inch three shot group at the bench from 50 yards....
my 2cents....

That's only 1moa of precision. A decent gun, ammo and shooter should be able to cut your groups down by 50% or more.

Sako's are hard to find now. Try gunbroker or gunsamerica. I think they run around $700 if you can find one.
