My vote is for a GM barrel as well. I would stay away from the Hogue stock as there have been many complaints against it. Just do it right the first time. It may take more time to save for the extra cost of the better parts, but in the end it will be cheaper than buying 2 barrels and 2 stocks. Ask me how I know lol

Err all I read is tens of tens of TENS of pros for the Hogue. Don't know what could be bad about it, I love they way they feel. Couldn't be happier.

How am I not doing it right the first time...? I'm pretty sure our needs are just very different, that's all.

Lots of flex and poor fit/finish complaints. Ive read many post/reviews saying depending on where you rest the stock while shooting it changes the point of impact quite a bit. Our needs are probably the same: get better quality parts to build a decent rifle for less money. Im not one of the super accuracy 10/22 junkies, I just hate to see people settle on lesser products to save a few bucks.

I'll play devils' advocate on this one. You're both right.
Styles are dependent upon needs. If you're looking for a good, well balanced off-hand rifle,
then the Hogue stock with a shorter barrel will work for you. If you want something for more benchrest work, bi-pod the Hogue, or get a different stock. If you want off hand with a longer barrel, get an aluminum barrel. If you want to strictly benchrest the rifle, then go with a different stock, (laminate) and a lighter, more accurate barrel. It all depends on what you're after. If you go here, http://wpgbc.com/gallery.htm look for the five rifles about 1/4 of the way down by David M. (my father) This will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Yea I hear you Mongoose, I'm really not settling on the Hogue, I happen to like it a lot, maybe that will change after shooting it more... I don't like many of the other stocks out there, I love the rubber finish for traction.

I'm definitely looking for an off hand, fun to shoot rifle, not a benchrester by any means haha... Thanks for the input wam.

They certainly do feel nice, they have a very unique texture. They remind me of the grips Hogue contracts for the Ruger GP100 revolvers.

In the end, any 10/22 combo will be infinitely better than no 10/22 combo. I know Im going to grab mine when the Zombies attack

I bought an A&B barrel + a Fajen adjustable stock for $140 directly from Battenfeld Technologies a few years ago. I was able to net $90 for the stock off of Craiglist so for a little wheeling and dealing, I ended up with a 16" fluted bull barrel for $50 + shipping. Deal can be had if you look around.

I got the A&B, plus I have the GM barrel. The weight difference on the fluted A&B vs the GM is tremendous. Great accuracy out of either barrel but my 18" GM is a little better than my A&B stainless fluted, and it's due to the weight, not the length.

I got the GM barrel, used, for <$90.

The chamber is a Bentz (sp?) chamber and CCI MiniMags are NOT recommended.

QFT, the term "money bucket" can easily apply.

For what it is worth, I have a Green Mountain barrel on my 10/22, and I am quite happy with it. Shoots more or less one hole groups at 50 yards using the cheapest bulk ammo I can find.
