Scope vs. Iron sights for 10/22?

I just bought a 10/22 for my first "plinking" gun. The stock sights don't look very adjustable, but I should practice with iron sights before putting on a scope or red dot on it. What do you think about that? What do you think of a red dot sight on this thing? I thought it would be cool, and if I am shooting within 100 yards, how much scope do you really need, right? I know it's all subject to preference, but I am curious what you prefer - scope, red dot, irons, etc.?

I bought a set of williams adjustable peep sights for mine. They mount on the receiver and replace the front sight with a gold dot version.

Of course, I also have a 10/22 with a Leupold fixed 4X. I love them both!

The factory open sights aren't all that great, but they'll do for 25-50 yards. Beyond that you'll either want a quality adjustable sight set or a scope.

I have found 4x (fixed) to be adequate for a 10/22.

Peep sights look good - I would prefer a post or spike on the front instead of a dot - I saw one called techsights - they look real good.

        Williams? I'll look 'em up

        Thank you

I have the tech sights on my 10/22. They miles ahead of the stock sights. I highly recommend if you're going the iron sights route.

I've got a Walmart Centerpoint 4-16x40 scope on my 10/22. It works great, cost about $70 or so. I mostly use it for ground squirrels, in the lower half of the magnification range.

I'd get acquainted with the factory iron sights before upgrading, you just might be surprised. The 10/22 is an awesome gun right out of the box.

I personally can not get a good sight picture with the 10/22 iron sights. On my first 10/22 the rear sight had the ability to be flipped over and use a square notch instead of a circle notch. I could not see the front sight through the circle but alright through the square. I sent it in and got a brand new 10/22 from Ruger for a issue I had with the gun. The new 10/22 only has a circle notch and will not flip over. Long story short I got a scope and love it. The only thing to be careful of is to not to over tighten the screws that hold on the scope base. They can very easily be over tightened and stripped.

I've never been able to hit a damn thing with the factory irons. They were just flat out awful to me. The scope base I discarded. I replaced it with a set of Weaver high-rise rings that screw down directly to the receiver, in place of the rail. You're right about the screws, though ... definitely have to be careful with those.

i like the irons on my 10/22's. of course, i grew up on that style of sight, so maybe im biased. never felt the need to put anything else on top of one of them. i do love the aperture style irons on almost all my other rifles, though. a marlin 39a with an aperture rear is a magical creature, to say the least.

I would highly recommend the Tech Sights as the components can be replaced with off the shelf AR-15 parts and posts if desired. With that you'll develope good fundamentals and will greatly appreciate what you can later do with some good glass on top. I can regularly hit shotgun shells at 100 yards! Mind you that I have replaced the barrel but once you get hooked, watch out!! Have fun and welcome to the world of "I just got the 10-22 to save a little money; it's just a 22, how bad can it be?"

Thanks you guys - I will break it in with the factory sights. Hard to resist putting a fancy reticule on there though. Good to know - I'll be careful with the screws!

If you strip your screw holes you can use lock tight to hold them in. There are a few other options as well. If you end up stripping them ( I HOPE NOT) send me a PM and I will help you out. I stripped mine

Old school here. Dab of flourescent paint on front factory sight or tech sight after that has worked for me.
