    .22WMR autoloading rifles?

Sorry if this question has been asked. I've been reading up on rimfire ammo since in CA seems to say rimfire = ok for tactical style ergonomics. The 22mag seems to be the most powerful rimfire and one that is decently suitible for real tactical situations. I cant find anywhere references to 0.22WMR with pistol grip and detachable box mags. I cant even find anything autoloading period (not even tube mag and non-scary grip).

Everything i've read on the 22 WMR is very positive and its rimfire so why can I only find bolt action versions? I think a tactical syled 22WMR would be excellent for every application, low recoil for spot on double tap.

    Thanks

Have you looked at Ruger's 10/22?

Still, I wouldn't count on anything rimfire for any kind of actual tactical application. Tacticool, maybe.

i thought a 50 grain @ 1700ish fps and maybe a trigger job for that double tap would be pretty tactical (i love that euphemism). But ya I know there are far more considerations for stopping power and ballistics than what this newbie has read so far.

All other considerations aside, I have 10/22s in LR and Mag, and love them all. And there are a buttload of aftermarket parts available for them.
        You really can't go wrong.

There are not too many semi-autos in 22 magnum. Here are the one's I know of, there may be more.

          New:
          Remington 597
          Magnum Research 17/22
          Excel Arms Accelerator Rifle

          Used, discontinued:
          Ruger 10/22
          Browning BAR 22

The Ruger is getting hard to find and very expensive for a base gun to begin customizing. I would say it would be my choise if I had the money though. I have shot the Remington and really like it a lot. Very accurate and functioned great, some aftermarket stuff available for it. The 22 wmr actually has come a long ways in the past few years with some very devistating loads from most ammo makers.

wow thanks for the list Kurt_r. I really like the aesthetics on the Excel Arms version. Pretty tacticool+cal to me, and reasonably priced. Any opinions/experience with this one? If it's a reliable piece ima kick myself for getting the umarex m4 - damn ignorance.

I'll stick to the 10/22 LR. I recently put a 1:9 barrel on mine for this ammo:
Aguila 22 Long Rifle Sniper Sub-Sonic ammo. This ammo has a 60 gr. Solid Point Lead Bullet. It travels at 950 FPS, and exhibits 120 ft-lb of energy upon impact. This ammo was especially designed for weapons with silencers and match grade barrels. This ammo is the heaviest .22 LR available on the market today and can be fired in any .22LR that is in good condition. Tests done by the manufacturer and other agencies show that this ammo will penetrate approximately 24 inches of ballistic gelatin at 200 meters.

The Accelerator looks great and really handy. With CCI ammo that can do ~2300 fps 50? grain jacketed HP too, at defense range I think it would fragment crazy like a 5.56. I think fragmention is associated with stopping power but I'm not sure. It kinda look like 22WMR has fallen out of favor to the 0.17.

Hmm with Excel Arms just around the corner maybe they will have some 2nds cosmetic blemishes or test fired rifles for a discount.

In the early 90's AMT made a .22 mag autoloader that used a detachable magazine, it was called the, "Magnum Hunter" and had a good reputation for accuracy. They are not very common but can be found on the used market.

One of the very best .22 Magnums on the market today is made by Volquartsen. A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. I have one and cannot say enough good things about it. Very, very accurate. MOA with most quality .22 Mag ammunition on the market. As to its value as a personal defense weapon, I will leave that up to the expects. I do recall a quote by Bill Jordan, ( for those of you that do not know who I am talking about, goggle his name) where he said and I paraphrase "it is a wicked little cartridge". It is my experience that the .22 Mag is indeed a "wicked little cartridge" much underrated by those that only believe it is nothing more than a souped up .22 LR.

This should interest varminters looking for a harder-hitting rimfire round with better ballistics and accuracy. The most common .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR) ammunition features a 40gr round nose or flat point bullet with a Muzzle Velocity of about 1910 fps.

We should add to the list best we can. I know there is probably more but there was a HK type and a Marlin type as well. I can slamfire my Taurus mod 72 pump .22mag so it's almost semi auto!

The best 'defense type' .22 mag rifle ever made was the Grendel R31.

It uses 30 round magazines and has a fluted chamber... (was originally designed as a full auto PDW)

                              they run around 800-1000 bucks...

                              I spent 14-1500 on min IIRC, but mine is a P31... not a R31.... (pistol )
