From what I've heard, the Marlin is slightly more accurate out of the box. That being said, I don't have a Ruger rifle to compare it to, and the Marlin I have is only accurate if I do my part correctly.

Are you planning on doing any mods to the rifle? If so, there's a bunch of stuff you can do on a 10/22.

Well I am putting a scope on it. I'm going to use it to hunt small animals. Now I am actually thinking about a .22 magnum rifle. What do you think?

By small animals I am guessing that means rabbit and squirrel size. If so, then a .22lr will work just fine and a .22WMR will blow them to smiterines. If you are going to want to eat them, then a .22lr is the best choice, if for varmint control then still a .22lr out to about 75 yards, .22wmr 75 to 150yds, beyond that you need either a .17hmr (out to 200yds) or a centerfire.

Keep in mind that .22lr bulk ammo can be purchased for around $20 for 500 rounds or about $.04 per round. .22WMR ammo will cost you at least $.20 per round with .17hmr just a bit higher that .22wmr. Centerfire is even more.

In the end the gun is cheap. The ammo becomes the real cost of shooting.

I doubt you will find a .22wmr or .17hmr for $200, even used.

Bolt action rifles tend to be more accurate than semi-automatic. That could be important for hunting.

Marlin 795 all the way. I have plenty of experience with 795s, 60s, and 10/22 and I squirrel and rabbit hunt with my 795 everytime. No mods needed, although I did throw a cheap center point 3-9 scope on it from walmart....

10/22's are nice because there's a lot of aftermarket parts for them.

If you want a rifle and don't plan on doing anything to it a 795 is a nice choice as well.

I just took my new Marlin 795 out for it's first shooting today. Very accurate and fun. I think a 10/22 is just as good or better, but I don't think they sell them new for under $200 anymore (at least not around here).

My first and still favorite rifle is the 10-22.
Best bet find a BLUED one a few years old, with the metal trigger guard. I think the workers at the factory cared a little more when Bill Ruger was alive. Even if the barrel was whipped (which you'd have to mistreat the gun to do) people dump their new unfired barrels when they mod out their 10-22s and getting one would be el Cheapo. I built these four rifles on used guns
(the receivers were all that was left of the original gun:

I pick up my new Marlin 795 on Saturday, it was $149 at Bass Pro Shops and there is a $25 rebate till the end of the year, My local Big5 just put them on sale for $139. So for a .22 i would look into it. Or look for a .17hmr Last week Bass Pro had a Marlin 917 with walnut stock on sale for $190 I have the 917VS and it is a tack driver.

.17hmr ammo is currently about $17 per 50 locally and $12 +ship online

The Marlin is looking real nice and Big5 has them on sale for 135 with rebate, but those rugers x new yawker has look pretty sweet. I'm gonna have to flip a coin after I see how much a Ruger 10/22 is going to cost me

Marlin 795 or 60. Same Action and barrels just 60 is tube feed and 795 is mag feed. Both provide the same top for a scope or tech sights.

No knock on the rugers though, you can trick them out all over the place but your $200 price tag will skyrocket.

I have all four and here are some thoughts. The Savage 64, which frequently goes on sale at Big for about $139, has a 4x15 scope, which is way underpowered, so you will still need another scope.

The Marlin 795 is frequently on sale at Turners for less than Big 5's sale price and has a $25 rebate until the end of the year.

The Marlin 60 and various types of Ruger 10/22's are also frequently on sale at Turners.

If you just want to slap a scope on, then the Marlin 60 may be your best choice, it has a 15 round tube magazine so there are no other magazines to buy or maintain.

I have 2 Glenfield 60's which are the same as the Marlin 60's but with different stocks. The last one I bought for $95 from someone who listed it in the guns for sale forum.

I don't think you would be disappointed with any of them.

If the Marlin 60 has a 15 round tube is that legal here in California?

Yes, otherwise Turner's couldn't sell them. I have one of the older ones with an 18 round tubular mag that is still going strong, made in 1985. Added a Boyds thumbhole stock last year. Great little semi and with the microgroove barrel is pretty accurate out to 75yds. Smoked a lot of ground squirrels and rabbits around my property as they were eating up the wiring in our cars/trucks. No mas problemo! If you get one its best to get a one piece scope mount as they have problems moving the scope around when the action cycles after a few rounds. Pyamid Air has a couple, I use the Gamo airgun model and works like a champ. I understand that Tech Sights work well on them also. No experience with those.

If you ever consider getting into the Appleseed shoots, the Marlin 795 or Ruger 10/22 is a better choice as part of the Appleseed requirement is changing magazines, hard to do with a tube.
