Marlin 795

A couple of Calgunners and I were shooting our Marlin 795 at 200 and 300 yard targets this weekend up in ASR (with scope + spotter + compensation = hit!)

Shooting 300 is easy once you figure out the hold over for your gun. Fun to make bets with people who doubt it can be done. Not the most accurate at that distance, but sure is fun!

It was my first, to be honest I wish I would have gotten a CZ or a similar bolt action .22lr

that said I still own mine, it eats all ammo, and after thousands of rounds I can count on one hand how many malfunctions I've had.

I pick mine up this Saturday, $139 at Bass Pro and the $25 rebate. Cant go to wrong for that price. I will check the sights but they looked crappy, I think I have the same sights on a old crosman BB gun in the shed.
I plan to put a small red-dot on it, I only plan to use it as a fun 50 yard shooter, the ammo cost for my .17hmr was getting to high

Yup, it's true. To hit the 200 yard steel, just aim for the top of the 200 yard berm. To hit the 300 yard steel (shoot the small ones hanging on a chain because it's easy to spot the hits) aim near one of the 400 yard targets behind and above it. With a spotter giving you corrections and a decent reference point, hits aren't that tough.

As for the Marlin 795, we mounted a Tasco World Class (budget scope) on Sajedene's rifle that afternoon. After a quick sight-in at 25 yards, we moved the paper back to 50 yards to check zero. Her first 5 shots blew away the little orange dot inside the 10-ring. She finished off the magazine at the same target and all 10 shots were well within the 10 ring although the group did open up a little bit. That can kinda happen when you destroy your aiming point . That was with the Federal bulk ammo in a carton.

So that's when we decided to try 200 and then 300 yards.

As for a CZ bolt-action, actually my first .22lr rifle was a CZ 452 Lux and it's one of my best buys ever. Back when Wolf Match Target was $20 a brick, I would shoot cases of the stuff out of my CZ. I could never get better than 3/4 inch groups at 50 yards consistantly but I think it can do better (never scoped it to check gun's precision level).

So I've recommended the CZ 452 to a ton of people and everyone who has shot it loved it. But when in comes down to it, a lot of people won't spend that much money on a .22lr rifle (except, strangely a Ruger 10/22). Only one guy went out and got his own CZ 452 after shooting mine. And it's not like I was recommending a $1000+ Anschutz, either. My CZ cost $400 out the door and you can get it cheaper if you get the Trainer/Military version. People have gotten in line to shoot my 452, but they just won't buy it.

Anyways, I have the 452 for when I want to bear down and concentrate with iron sights, and I have the 795 for cheap plinking with a scope.

The Marlin 60 uses the same action as the 795.

I guess I'm biased because I have Marlin 60. It's the first rifle I ever purchased for myself and it's really accurate and reliable. I still think it's a better rifle choice for a noob. No magazine to lose, not mention it holds more than the CA 10 round limit. Just because it uses the same action doesn't mean it's comparable quality.

Liking the 60 is fine, I agree with most of the reasons you just listed. I like it simply because it comes with a wood stock.
I just don't think it's fair to call it "a lot more rifle."

My brother has the model 60, I have the 795, we both like my gun better. Hell just loading the 60 is a pain.
