17HMR rifle choice

CZ all the way. I have the Ruger M77/17 VT in both .17HMR and .17M2. since I bought the .17 M2 I don't take my HMR out anymore. Ammo is half the price and the squirrels still explode. I use the M2 out to 200+ yards but it is extremely deadly 150+ no problem. I also have a converted 10/22 in M2 that is a tack driver but I tend to shoot faster and my kill rate goes down. The Savage or Marlins are vey accurate, as all the .17 rimfires I have shot but the CZ set triggers are great and the Marlin and Savages need work. so for my money I would go CZ. CZ now makes a COMBO in 22LR/17HMR with both barrels and a SILHOUETTE competition version with a 16" barrel and synthetic stock for IMSSA.

I don't own a .17 but I would suggest using a .223 or .22-250 just because you can reload the ammo, and .17 ammo is kind of expensive IMO for a rimfire. The price of .17 should be comparable to reloading .223, or if you dont want to reload you could just buy the Russian steel cased ammo which is a cheap alternative as well. Plus the .223 ammo has better range and more stability.

Get the Savage w/ the accutrigger. No better gun for the price point. I have a Marlin 917v, and it's sweet, but the Savage wasn't available back then w/ the accutrigger. Had it been, I would've just bought it out of the box and not spent extra $ on the stock and trigger. On the other hand, and at 200 yards, I'd just get a centerfire, say a .204 Ruger or .22-250 and be done with it. But just for giggles, I give my gratuitous Marlin pic:

For me, I have found that wind doesn't effect it as much as a .22 or even .223. The .17 is fast and small, like a needle so it does fairly well.I found that a head wind or tail wind can cause more effect the a quartering wind. Like most the longer the distance the more the wind will effect it as the bullet slows. I shoot 200-300+ rounds of .17M2 a month and 50-100 .17HMR a month. Since I started shooting my .17M2s I don't even take a .22lr out anymore.

I have the same Savage and really like it, cheap to shoot and a fun round. On the other hand, I shot a 22-250 and that is a fun round. You sound like you already have a .223, and that is a good option as well.

I can't believe no one has asked you when the party is at your house....get a few calgunners over there and we will take care of the problem.

I put down 30 ground squirrels last weekend with my bone stock 93r17.

Longest shot was 150 yards leaning against a tree. Most shots were about 100 yards.

Many shots were center mass and resulted in blown out midsections. Pretty effin devastating wounds. I was using hornady 17 gr. and a barska hot magnum scope.

The savage is gtg out the box in my book.

I have been waiting to get one to test. I have a customer that wants one. I am thinking that since I have never had a CZ that wasn't outstanding that they wouldn't make one that couldn't stand up. You would ahve to resight the scope but that isn't that bad for a switch barrel.

+1 for the savage. I have the stainless model, and I have been able to squeeze half inch groups (ps- at 100yd)out of it with a barska and cci tnt's. No mods have been done to the rifle.

if your set on getting a 17 here's my personal favorite, the savage 93R17 TRR. I dont own it but if I do ever get one this is would be it.

I picked up a Savage 93R17 BTVS a couple months back and love it. The accutrigger is nice, and you should be able to get out to 200yds with .17HRM, though the round is susceptible to drift from the wind. Take with a grain of salt, as my experience with long distance accuracy rifle shooting is limited.
