    Walther CA P22 .22LR

So one of the many handguns in which I own is as the title states: A Walther CA P22 chambered in .22LR. I've probably put close to 500 rounds through it, and I'm starting to get more and more FTE's with it.
I just came back from the Firing Line in Huntington Beach where half my rounds became FTE's. I've thoroughly cleaned the gun, ran Winchester Hollow Points, Winchester White Box FMJ, Blazer FMJ and Remington FMJs through it and had issues with most of the brands.

What do you think the issue is? It's getting to the point (even though I baby this gun like all of my other guns) that I want to sell it.

Thanks for the responses in advance.

Run the CCI Mini-Mags in your P22....wouldn't use anything else. Clean after each use. Hollow points are a disaster in the P22's and so is most of the other .22 ammo.

        +1

I cannot get anything else to work reliably... I still get the odd FTE, but probably once every 1000 rounds.

alittle polishing and shooting goes along way

Notice that none of the springs are installed. This has no impact on illustrating what is going on but if they are in place it sure makes holding the camera and the pistol much more difficult if you are doing this all by yourself. My finger for example replaces the mag safety spring in pressing...

My P22 never liked anything other than CCI Minimags and Aguila Super Extra. The 500 or so rounds that you've put through it so far, were they with the ammo you listed and have you never had issues before?

The fact that this pistol has a 'bible' dedicated to fixing it is a testament as to how incomplete and low quality the gun really is. I can't believe that after all of the hassles people have had with the gun, they still haven't bothered to fix it to allow people to shoot bulk ammo right out of the box.

One of the biggest reasons people buy these pistols is for cheap trigger time, and lots of it. CCI mini-mags are cheap relative to centerfire pistol cartridges, but are extremely expensive compared to other .22LR rounds. It's disappointing to say the least.

I Smoothed the bottom of the chamber on mine. Then I polished the feed ramp and removed .02" off the face of the hammer. Then replaced the extractor with one from Volquartsen. Total time 1 hour. Now it will even eat Remington goldens. I even shot some Aguila 60 grain subsonics yesterday and they were the most fun.

Read the P22 bible. If you own a dremel you are almost done.

The older modles had big issues...

I agree. I have read horror stories about P22's for years. Finally decided to buy one, and it has been one of my best buys yet. Mine eats anything as long as it has enough power to cycle the slide. But nothing jams in it. I only have like 1500 rounds through mine and it works great. Maybe I just got lucky, but I think they just make them better now than they use to.

Did you have to do any gunsmithing on your P22, or is it working straight from the factory as is? When did you buy the P22? Perhaps they did actually fix some of the issues, but I haven't heard any satisfied customers chiming in about any fixes that may have been done.

I haven't done any work on it, it's still factory fresh. I bought it on black Friday last year, so it's pretty new. I have also read tons of bad things on the internet, I just haven't personally seen any

I printed out the whole P22 bible and planned on doing all the mods when I bought it. But then it didn't need any. I even shot Remington Thunderbolts through it last week without any problems. I usually shoot Blazer bulk lead without issues as well. The only problems I have with it are with Federal bulk. No jamming, but sometimes the round doesn't have enough power to cycle the slide. Some bricks run through it fine, others won't run at all

Mine is a POS, the front sight fell off on BLM land and got lost. It jams every few shots, fails to eject, even without the mag in it the slide stops half way!

luckily, a friend is going to fix it.

I may have gotten one of those weird P22s that will shoot anything and everything. I've read tons of reviews and recommendations telling me to use CCI MiniMags. I have yet to bother with that. I use Walmart bulk .22 and have gotten maybe a dozen or so FTEs out of 3000+ rounds.

I did get one critical failure a little after the 2000 round mark. The hammer spring broke. I sent it to the factory and got it fixed. It's back to functioning perfectly.

Yeah, I have one of those oddball P22s also. Bought it sometime in 2002 or 2003. Mostly shot Federal or Winchester bulk out of it. Tried some of the higher end .22 ammo but didn't see the point since I could shoot bulk brick stuff out of it. I have no idea how many rounds I've thrown downrange. Couldn't even ballpark guess.
