.22lr Ammo... What's good these days?

It has been over 15 years since I've had to buy .22lr. What's good & what's bad, these days? I see a lot of hollowpoint and a lot of these "bulk" boxes all over the place.

The weapon in question is the wife's new Ruger 10/22 (which I will borrow a lot). It's the standard "base" model, with no tricked out features.

    Thanks.

Most people tend to stay away from the Golden Bullets packs. Cheapo Walmart Federal packs will do fine for plinking

      For a 10/22?

      Whatever is on sale.
It cannot be inherited, nor can it ever be purchased.
You and no one alive can buy it for any price. It is impossible to rent and cannot be lent.
You alone and our own have earned it with...Your sweat, blood and lives. You own it forever.

      The title is....."United States Marine".

From what I've been reading, I'd stay away from RGB. CCI and Federal feed fine in my .22 conversion.

Plinking, ground squirrels, varmits, casual target shooting I prefer the Federal Bulk packs at WalMart. Cheap, accurate enough and generally cycle a semi-automatic well. For accurate target shooting on a budget I use Wolf Match Target ($45 for 500) and Aquila Match Target (blue box @ $30/500). Both ammos are used in different rifles as they are picky about the target ammo. I have never used but have read nothing good about Remington Golden Bullets. The "wouldn't fire/disposal" box at my range is full of them every time I go.

What about Winchester Super X 36gr?

I bought a couple boxes worth today at Cow Palace from Miwall. I was looking to stretch my dollar, so it was between those and Golden Turds---and from past experience with Golden Turds, I will try the Super X stuff.

The Federal 550 and 333 packs from Wally World work well for me, for plinking. Wouldn't use them for hunting or serious target work though.

Same here. Federal from WalMart works great, other than that CCI MiniMags.

Federal bulk from wally world for cheap blasting, Wolf MT if I'm being serious. Groups are 50% smaller with MT vs Fed bulk. Worst in my bone stock 10/22 is winchester wildcat. Groups are 200% bigger than fed bulk.

Why don't you suggest Remington Gold? I just shot a bunch of that stuff tonight and it performed well in my gun(dedicated upper). Before tonight I had used almost exclusively Federal bulk, and Win XPERT HV with a lot of CCI thrown in as well. Neither of those are as accurate in my gun as the Remington.

I have had no problems with Rem Gold. But its all 10 years old so maybe the new stuff is not up to par?
