10/22 coke can 100 yards

My shooting buddies and their families regularly have what we call ".22 afternoons"---that is after shooting the .223s, 9mm, 45s etc. we but down the expensive to shoot guns and break out the .22s---lots of fun, little cost, everybody has a good time! Clay targets at 100 yards (off-hand) until they are reduced to pieces, then you keep shooting to try and hit the smallest pieces---very difficult with a handgun.

i'd be lucky to hit the mountain with my handgun skills. Though I think I have a good start, I can squeeze the trigger and have it stay perfectly still, both thumbs towards the target, lean forward...

I think I should get a new stock, like a thumbhole or a dragonuv type, its annoying to hold the .22 carbine stock stock when i'm 6'3.. Also, would it be wise to purchase a new barrel? I was looking @ the barrel thread on this page, and I wonder if it will improve my .22's accuracy enough to justify the cost?

The Remington "golden bullets" are just about the worst .22lr available. Some get lucky with a good lot, but if you search around you will find no other ammo that has as many complaints. Look at the ammo section over at rimfirecentral.com for more detailed info. The Federal bulk from Walmart is tough to beat for the price. I use the Federal bulk, CCI Mini-mags, and Wolf MT...that pretty much covers just about all my .22lr needs.

What are u looking to get out of yr 22? and how much do u wanna spend? Do u have a dremel? Do u just wanna plink cans 5'' x 3'' or are u looking to get more out of it...

I give u an example, my target 22 places all ten round in a 3/4 dot without cutting the line, i also pent over a 1000 on it and a month tuning it to wolf match target ammo...
A factory 22 hand gun will group maybe an inch at 50 yards, 12 feet u might get them to touch using a rest... now these results will vary but im just assuming yr an average shooter like most of us. More or less buying a new barrel and getting a good lesson on how to hold and shoot any gun and u will start impressing friends quickly...

If u dont wanna spend any money on the gun buy blazer, federal target ammo or wolf and u will be more accurate getting away from the junk bunk stuff. Stay far far away from the lighting junk, im my opinion its dirty and corrosive.

So far i've had good luck with the 525 bulk remington, but federal is my favorite brand. I like to mix it up so i usually buy a few different kinds every time i go out, which is about once every couple of months if im lucky. It's much more fun going with friends, so I have to wait on them to gather some money also.

I've got a question, since my carbine 10/22 is not drilled for a swivel stud for a bipod, where can i find some good size sandbags to use as a rest? I don't want a caldwell shooting bag or anything, just run of the mill bag that i can fill with rice or corn or something, so i can have lots of them for my m1 carbine, 10/22's, marlin tube fed .22 & to help see how accurate my P95 really is.

I've got the tools to to drill the gun, but i'd much prefer sandbags since those can be used for all guns, and its alot cheaper than a nice $50 bipod.

To answer your question, yeah I have a dremel, and about every tool you can think of I'm not looking to spend a whole lot, maybe just a stock. Anyone know of any good dragonuv / thumbhole wood stocks? As before, I think those would go good with my big hands

No joke, my ex-girlfriend had a JC higgins 22 autoloader, i got consistent hits on a (8"??) flat rock at just under 300, of course i was shooting slightly downwards.

I will second the shotgun hulls, they are real fun to shoot at I always set them up so you are shooting at the (spent) primer, makes for a fun way to target practice!

Boyds stocks have a special run for a killer 1022 stock for 80 bucks!!!! I bought one for my wife and I'm gonna tiger strip it pink. A barrel and a stock will surpise the hell out of u in acuracy. I really only know ruger 1022 more than anything. I got nothing short of 100 tricks or tips to do to that. I hate to venture out past that... 1022 is by far the best gun to buy bec on how cheap u can trick it out and how much info there is out on it.

The best sand bag I have ever made is kitty litter in the bags shot is sold in. Not sure they type of bag it is but it lasts. Kitty little seems to compress or but cut in a way where it settles and won't, slosh around is the word, I live it and have a ton of them. I hate rice it never stays stable, sand gets my gun dirty and feels like a water ballon, steel shot or similar works as a from rest bec it's very heavy and will not move but who has the money to buy all that shot. I trying cutting up a bean bag chair out of the trash, super light but moved around. Walnut works but it's dusty abd if u wash it, it molds.

Stay away from pillow cases, old carhart jacket is killer, jeans or denium works. I filled up an oven mitt with that rubber on one side with litter, that was cool. Socks might work if there the thick hiking kind. Those ball things u use to strengthin yr grip works as a rear bag and super fun to shoot with a SW 460 revolver. Lol

Went out this past weekend and had a blast burning through a bulk box. Shooting in turns with a friend the afternoon devolved into Tomatoes at 100 yrds and clays at 200. Yes a .22 will travel 200 yards and still break a clay...but even with almost no wind it's game of "guesstimation".

When I worked for a golf course when i was a kid the boss would let me bring home 2 5 gallon buckets of range balls a week. All i can say is i got really good at shooting squirrel heads off with my .22 and could do some pretty cool tricks shooting golf balls.
