wow thats awesome congrats. So its basically a 10/22 with a built in rail on top. Its like a build it yourself kit. How would you go about registering this once you complete it? Because I thought the receiver is the part that needs to be registered. Check this out if you have that front accessory rail you can add flip up sights.

awesome job dead. theres nothing like the feeling of building something yourself.
i was worried that i wouldnt have big enough tools to do one of these. but if you can do it on a bench top drill press then i sure can too. i might have to make a mag lock for it and do a pistol build because that ruger charger looks like it would be a lot of fun.
i do have one tech question for you, is headspace an issue? if so how do you adjust it? is it just a matter of how deep you bore the hole for the barrel?Comment

If you bore the barrel hole all the way through, my understanding of the rifle is that the bolt is blowback operated, and held in place by the spring so headspacing is not an issue
Any 1022 experts that can help with this?Comment

@hadesomega I purchased the standard contour barrel so the front accessory rail wouldn't fit, if I ever decide it's worth an aftermarket bull barrel I'd love to have oneComment

Unless you really want to "build" the receiver, I'd say go with a purchased one. A quality completed one is only five dollars more, and you don' t have to worry about tools and jigs. But If its the satisfaction you're looking for after completing your own work, no price can be put on that.

Things I had to buy, that were not included in the tool kit which was included with the 80% receiver, were a drill press, a vice, and a tapping handle. The reason for the improvisations was simple, I have an 8 inch drill press and the total length required when the receiver was standing on end was about 12 inches. To fix this annoying problem dremel cut off the area where the bit was gripped by the chuck.
Another thing i did to make it all fit was to twist the whole drilling assembly backwards on the vertical stand and then i used a low profile vise to hold the reciever in place.
With a larger drill press of the proper size, this would have been much more simple. One of the things the website doesn't mention is that the barrel hole is recommended to be bored out to proper size on a mill, the instructions included in the kit actually recommend against using the 11/16 drill bit to ream the barrel hole to final size, but luckily I made it work!
Happy 4th everyone!
I think this will be my best one yet, or maybe my worst cause i can't actually shoot it yet
wait so im confused, do you need a mill to ream out the barrel hole? doesn't the kit come with a drill to bore out the barrel hole?Comment

Headspacing is set by the bolt. In firing position, the bolt assembly itself is against the barrel breech face. The depth indention in the bolt assembly is the actual headspace and on factory 10/22 bolts, this is pretty generous to account for the variances in the 22lr rims (typically 0.55") .awesome job dead. theres nothing like the feeling of building something yourself.

Now, some people polish up the bolt face to make it flat (and perpendicular to the front of the bolt) and then trim down the front of the bolt itself (thereby lowering the headspace) down to a target .0425" rim depth.

Brownell's sells "oversize" 6-48 threaded screws to fix this problem fast and easy.
Gunn is correct, headspace is set by the bolt resting against the barrel face, you should not have to mess with this.

The answer is yes, lol. The kits comes with a drill, but on the instruction kit, it recommends against using. Imagine the look on my face when i thought i had been scammed.
Anyways, I went ahead with the build, and it turned out well for me. Another user had a thread in the gunsmithing section that he tried to drill using a drill press like me, but his turned out off-center and crooked.
NEED, no, but should have, YES.Comment
