Just finished my first rifle that I can truly call my own! For the record, I am 18 years old, and i have had exactly 0 machining experience, and no one along the way to help me.
I am the only one in my family that truly enjoys this kind of stuff so, I have been purchasing my own tools through my own means over the years. Please enjoy!

As I said, I don't have nearly close to the proper tools, so a little bit of improvisation and luck on my part and it turned out well. With the recommended tools, I think it was a mill, it should be a breeze.

Congrats. Nice to see a fellow young calgunner. I'm pretty much in the same situation as you, only one in the family that enjoys firearms (or generally making stuff for that matter) so not many tools around the house.

Thanks man, My grandfather and uncles own plenty of rifles, so I've been around them for quite a while, but its my immediate family that is the problem they think I'm .
Anyways I wanted my first rifle to be mean something special to me, so I made it.

AWESOME! How long did it take you to finish the receiver? Care to do a little write up on just how you improvised? Would you be willing to help/instruct others? What tools did you need? Which 80% did you use? How much so you think the finished receiver actually cost you? Did you buy a complete rifle and just change the receiver? Or, did you buy every part indvidually? About how much do you think you have into the rifle? Wanna build an AK next?

This will be fun
It took me a solid 2 hours to finish all of the drilling and tapping of the holes, mind you i used this http://www.harborfreight.com/5-speed...ess-38119.html (and i totally recommend it for a cheap start).
The barrel hole I took much more time on getting it right and square, i stepped up boring the barrel whole starting with a 1/4 bit to a 3/8, 1/2 then reamed it with the included bit in the tool kit.
The 80 percent reciever, the drilling jig, and the tool kit was bought from http://www.ruger1022receiver.com/ . Buying from these people was very easy, and all parts shipped out the next day. All other parts I bought were either from Midway or Brownells. I think I am in for a total of a little over $300 for this scratch rifle, but I am sure i could have done it cheaper buying used parts. And YES! an AK is my next project, but ill be doing much more research on it before I'll buy anything for it.

You are absolutely relentless about encouraging "build-your-own AK".
I know I will end up at one of your build parties some day due primarily to your relentless promotion of this idea (and generously holding the build parties).
I've even looked a a parts kit or two lately.

It's tough to be the only "gear-head" in a family as I know from personal experience.
So what tools did you use and how did you use them?

Things I had to buy, that were not included in the tool kit which was included with the 80% receiver, were a drill press, a vice, and a tapping handle. The reason for the improvisations was simple, I have an 8 inch drill press and the total length required when the receiver was standing on end was about 12 inches. To fix this annoying problem dremel cut off the area where the bit was gripped by the chuck.

Another thing i did to make it all fit was to twist the whole drilling assembly backwards on the vertical stand and then i used a low profile vise to hold the reciever in place.

With a larger drill press of the proper size, this would have been much more simple. One of the things the website doesn't mention is that the barrel hole is recommended to be bored out to proper size on a mill, the instructions included in the kit actually recommend against using the 11/16 drill bit to ream the barrel hole to final size, but luckily I made it work!

For a builder who is 21 years or older, can one of these be serialized as a pistol frame and used for a Charger pistol build?
