I was looking at 22 ammo and I see CCI Mini Mag in regular and hollow point, stingers, maxi mag. I guess some are subsonic. Can anyone tell me what the differences are between these and their best applications. Thanks from the newbie.

Valid question ... go to CCI's website and they'll give you a breakdown of what to use for each application. If you have a 22lr don't look at the MAXI as they are for 22 mags. If you have an auto stay away from subsonic as they will not cycle the bolt.
EDIT: Just try all different brand of ammo, as some 22's are pretty finicky eaters !!Last edited by bjl333; 06-26-2010, 11:10 AM.Wanna learn to shoot SKEET? I am here to introduce all shooters to the sport of SKEET Shooting ....

maxi mags are magnum rounds and are for guns that are designed for magnums also known as wrmComment

Subsonics are typically for target shooting. The projectile stays more stable in flight if it doesn't cross back through the sound barrier down range. They can be more accurate for target shooting competition.
High velocity hollow points are typically for small game hunting or for more spectacular plinking on things like soda cans. The higher velocity means more energy on the target. The hollow point can mean more expansion of the projectile in the target.
But like bjl333 says, your particular firearm might have a preference for a certain type of ammo. It might shoot one brand of high velocity hollow points more accurately than another brand of subsonic target ammo.__________________

Thanks guys. I did go to CCI's website but it seemed a little sparse on general applications.Comment

I have a Neos which is a semi-auto and it cycles perfectly and consistently on subsonic, even the cheap stuff.Comment

So if the price for the CCI mini Mags is the same for normal and hollow point versions, should I get the hollow point if the gun likes them?Subsonics are typically for target shooting. Yes. The standard procedure when you get a new .22LR firearm is to buy a couple of 50 round boxes of as many types of ammo as you can afford or have time to test. Then you compare how each type of ammo works in your particular firearm, testing for both accuracy and reliability. When you find the ammo that your gun likes best then you buy a whole case or more of that ammo.
If you find that two or more types of ammo work well in your gun then go with the one that is cheapest, or easiest to find in stock. Many guys try the Federal 550 round bulk packs from Walmart first because they are both cheap and easy to find.__________________

So I would ask what is the purpose. I use CCI Mini Mags for small game, but recently I have been using it for target and plinking because I got a great deal on a bulk buy. Normally for mass plinking I go with bulk Federal. Although I do agree with the concept of buying a few boxes of various rounds and seeing what you like best. Your mileage will vary.
