What to do with .22lr brass?

I'm going through .22lr like water lately and since the ejected brass falls nicely into a container I started saving it. All it has is powder residue, no dirt.

Is there a market for this stuff or would a recycler take it?

I just leave it at the range, not sure it's worth anything. If it is, I should start saving it since I go through at least a brick a week.

.22 cases have been used for sleeving .224 bullets with, other than that I just throw them in the recycle bin or save them and take them with my to get a few $ when I take my aluminum cans in

Sell the brass. Noone will buy it to reload, but....

Brass is brass and its worth money. They melt it down and make new brass casings with it.

Not sure who to sell it too. But when I was shooting last weekend the people saved every single brass case no matter what caliber. One of the guys we shot with sells it in bulk and thats what he said they do with the brass. But I guess if making some spare money interests you you could look into finding places who want brass.

save it up until you have about 100lbs of it, then take it down to the local recycle center. It needs to be a place that takes all kinds of metal (brass, copper, aluminum, iron, etc.), not just a place that only recycles cans and bottles. But if you don't mix anything else with it and keep it strictly brass...you should be able to get a nice little chunk of extra cash.

I sweep up all my brass at the range, including all the 22LR. At home I sort out what I reload and the rest goes in the scrape bucket under my reloading bench with any rejected brass cases (split, damaged or corroded). A 5 gallon bucket gets me about $70 at the local scrap yard.

I read an article about some sort of equipment that could turn .22 brass into 5.56mm bullets but it costs a couple thousand or something.

Fired rimfire cases have been used to make .224 bullets. The rimfire case is the jacket. The core is formed out of lead wire swaged (formed in a die to dimension), then placed in the jacket and bullet formed in a forming die. I got rid of all my .223 stuff and no longer load it, but that's what it was used for.

No. You can easily swage your own .224 bullets on a Rockchucker press and a set of swage dies to do it is less than $500. That's how RCBS got it's start, Rock Chuck Bullet Swage is what it stands for. Huntington made the Rockchucker press and it was sold with a swage die kit to make your own .224 bullets from rimfire casings. A friend complained about the lack of quality in reloading presses and dies, so he made him a press and die set for his rifle. The rest is history.

That's an interesting piece of history. Thank you for that!
