I have the savage MarkII TR with a SS 16x. Tons of fun to shoot the dingers out at 300. I don't hear it but I can see it hit. About 39 moa of elevation should get you there. This is why you need a scope that has lots of adjustment. I shoot MUCH better groups with my 700 PSS now. Trigger time is trigger time.

I personally feel like trigger control and body position are all you can really "learn" from shooting a 22LR that might help with your .308 (Don't get me wrong even dry firing is useful!). Reading wind is independent from the cartridge and the numbers are so different for .22LR vs .308WIN that I don't see how memorizing bullet drop / wind dope for a .22LR will help you at all with the .308. Besides the TOF (time of flight) and BC's are totally different for those rounds.

I'd say you're better off dry firing (with a snap cap preferably) and practicing your body position, check weld and trigger control with your Remmy. It doesn't take tons of rounds to learn. You just need to be purposefully about how you shoot. Taking a class from a great long range shooter will help more than anything.

Buy a .22LR for shooting mechanics practice. But ranging things with your reticule doesn't even require ammo... so learn those elements with your .308WIN.

You can have the most fun you can have with a rifle using a really accurate 22 match type rifle.
