nice build. If i couldn't do the job with a shoulder shot i wouldnt use the round. I agree, good excuse to build an AR. Only thing I've used on a yotes was my dad's 25-06, the scope was crap but the rifle did more then i needed it to.

I was going to buy a stainless ruger 10/22, and i was going to convert it to a 17hm2. My question is, what kind of accuracy am i looking at with a standard ruger 10/22 receiver and a 17hm2 conversion kit??

I put a tac-sol barrel on my 10/22 without any trigger mods and I can easily shoot ragged holes at 50 yards with match ammo and thats with a .22 LR. I have hit ground squirrels out to 150 yards or so on plenty of occasions.

not sure about a standard receiver, but i will say my nodak reciever is a .22lr reciever with a 17hm2 con.

Here's my 17hm2, kinda similar to OP. All it took was a barrel swap and Im set.

I can't speak for the 17m2, but I have shot jacks & squirrels with the 17hmr. Works like a champ. I know of two large Rottweilers shot with the 17HMR. One dropped immediately and the other made it about 40yds then dropped. Both were shoulder shots. I should ad that the dogs were chasing a farmers livestock. Range was about 40 yds.

Chasing... Not attacking? I hope they were at least a threat before some a**hole went and picked off someones lost and confused pets...

I've heard of folks using .17hmr on yotes before, and as always, shot placement was key. Not sure how the 17hm2 compares balistics wise, but it looks like the same round in a shorter, fatter case so it's probably the same. Unless you're absolutely sure you can hit in an instant kill spot.....don't be a dick, use something that isn't going to make the animal suffer. You're already taking its life, do it with some dignity. If you can make that shot though, take it. Just don't do it so that you can say that you did unless you're good enough to do it every time.

You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

He said chasing. I have a friend who's dog was chasing some horses. The dog was shot and my friend held no ill feelings towards the owner of the horses. The horses are expensive. He has horses himself.

Chasing and attacking are two different things... I do a lot of varmint control and make sure live stock are safe as well... BUT like I said chasing well hell my dog chases just about anything for fun. If someone shot my dog for whatever reason short of it putting something or someone at threat they better hide...

This would make for an interesting thread/topic elsewhere. I will start it. Sorry about the drift here.

haha, no worrys, i agree with chrisO.

my best friends dog got out once, wondered a mile or so away from the house, came on a big property where a guy had goats. he shot the dog. this dog was like my friends child. had it since he got married for 5 yrs. never once in his life attacked anything. and this trigger happy jerkoff shot him. after we questioned him, he even admited that the dog wasnt even chasing his goats, he just shoots any dogs that come on his property because of problems he has had in the past of dogs killing his goats...

needless to say... we showed up to his house later that night with ski masks and worked him over with a baseball bat...
