17hm2 enough power?

hey guys, i got a 17hm2 that i use for rabbits. works great! tac driver and smaller bullet so less chance of messing the meat up vs a .22

my question though, is it powerful enough for coyotes? i thought it would be too small of a cartridge but my friend said "lets just try it!"...

but im not into hurting things so they can die later... :/ if im gonna kill something im gonna take it out

i know if i got a head shot on it, which is VERY possible with my set up, it would probably kill it. but as a general rule, what do you guys think? if i get a behind the shoulder shot to the heart, would it go clean threw and leave enough damage to take it out?

sweet thanks for that matter, to add to my inquiry, with good shot placement a .22LR would work right? what do people typically use for coyotes? ive never hunted for them yet...

They use 22lr to kill thousnds of cows everyday.

they've used .177 pellet gun to hunt boar. Not recommended, but people so, not just red necks but professional guides too.

I think .17HMR would be a better choice. I know that Rich (bigballaizm) has posted pics of yotes he took out with a .17HMR

I would say might work but risky. I remember when the 17hmr first came out several people tried them for coyotes. There were many reports of coyotes running off with anything but a very well placed shot. The hornady 17 gr hmr rounds weren't penetrating enough to to the vitals.

yeah, and thats the 17hmr... mines even smaller... and i dont want to do that... ill probably wait tell i get a better gun for the yots. that being said, what is the best rnd for them

Get something like a nice bolt gun in .243. That is a very versatile round with many different loads available.

I know guys who whack 'yotes with the HM2 all the time. My experience is that beyond 80-100 yards, the HM2 tapers off rapidly. I've found that beyond 75 yards instant kills on Mr Squirrel drop to about 50% with body shots. My HMR's are good out to 200 yards and beyond.

im so stoked you guys! it was shooting sub MOA at 100 yards!!!! im not jking! this first picture you can see the target its fliped around and the group to the far left is 5 shots! same hole literally! 5 shots! i have never owned a rifle this accurate. im so stoked! the second one is just a close up of the spot i was hitting.

im amazed because i know bolt actions are capable of this but semi auto?! im so happy
