    10/22 and subsonic rounds

    hello,

i'm relatively new to the forum and to rimfire rifles. i just picked up a 10/22 about 2 weeks ago.

my question is that in the instruction manual, it says to use standard velocity, high velocity, and hyper velocity .22LR rounds only. is there a reason not to use subsonic rounds? i've read that they are supposed to be more accurate and quieter.

Won't make a difference. I use wolf match subsonic and can group 5 shots into a dime at 50 yards.

You'll have to try them and see how your rifle reacts. Often times, the subsonic ammo simply doesn't have enough power to cycle the bolt, extract, and chamber a round. I had a bunch of Aguilla subsonic and ended up giving it to my brother to use in his bolt action, because neither my 10/22 nor my Mossberg 702 functioned with it reliably.

Yes, subsonic is considerably quieter than standard or high velocity ammo. But again, its because its loaded very light. My advice would be to skip the subsonic stuff in a semi-auto rifle, stick with high-velocity. The price is about the same anyhow, and almost all .22 lr ammo sold commonly in bulk is high velocity.

Yea i would imagine that they would not put subsonic in the manual because they cant be sure that it will cycle the bolt and be reliable.

I've had issues with subsonic in my old Marlin Glenfield 60, but it shoots fine in my (new) Ruger 10/22. Actually, every brand/speed of 22LR ammo shoots perfectly in my 10/22 so far.

If it's not contraindicated (i.e. magnum or Stinger in a 10/22 Tactical) and it cycles, then you're good to go. I'd recommend picking up a small pack of sub-sonic just to find out

I have 4, 10/22's and shoot subsonic Remington's nearly exclusively. I love them....sound like a hammer hitting a nail.....I have never had any problem with the rifles shooting them. When I discovered the rounds, I went out and bought one of the fine classic Remington Speedmaster 22's that will cycle everything from long rifle to shorts just to shoot them......but my Rugers work fine. So, My brother has the Speedmaster now.

They aren't MORE accurate, but they sure are fun. I like shooting them in my 10/22 for quiet times, but you have to cycle the bolt.

What are the remington subsonics? How do they compare to the Aguila colibri stuff? Those are 500 fps 11ftlbs and 20 grain weight.

Some subsonic's won't cycle the 10/22, but they'll still fire just fine and won't hurt the gun at all.

I shoot the Colibri's out of my Mark II in the warehouse into phonebooks and they're quieter than one of those "snap cap" fireworks that you throw on the ground. Out of a rifle they probably don't make any noise at all.

I found that mu 10/22 liked the 60 gr Aquila SSS rounds. They shot very well and were pretty quiet.

thanks everyone. i just picked up some remington subsonics. we'll see how it goes.

for the aguila sss 60 grain, i've read the barrel twist on stock 10/22 (which is 1:16" i believe) isn't enough to stabilize the round? any truth to that?
