+1 for the Savage with the Accu-trigger. The really nice thing about a bolt action rifle is that they slow you down and make you pay attention to shooting technique while semi-autos make the kids try to shoot as fast as they can.
When I say "kids" I mean children of all ages ;-)Using C Products 10 round magazines in my AR-15...just to be "safe"...Comment

There are too many choices when it comes to .22's. I myself have the following:
Walther G22
Walther P22
GSG-5
GSG-5SD
Remington 241 Speedmaster
Ruger 10-22 with tons of mods
Jennings J-22 (it was free)
If you know you are going to modify it, go with the 10-22 for sure. If you want something that is "old school cool" go pick up a Rem 241, you can get them used for great deals and these things just plain shoot! All the others ones are way fun and I love them all.
I have to agree with the one guy that said he avoided the 10-22 on purpose so he wouldn't dump all kinda of money into it. Believe me, it's true. You buy one and BAM, you're spending more money just because it's fun.Comment

Zatava Z5/Remington Model 5/Charle Daly Superior II. Very nice and accurate for the money, fully adjutable triggers. Steel, not plastic or aluminum.

reposting as i felt it appropriate for the thread.....
the answer rests mainly on the type of shooting you're acquiring the rifle for
this thread is probably worth your time
(just to be clear here, i don't agree w/the op opinion but it covers many of the current 22LR available today)
i'd pick up a sig sauer 522 over any of the options available today & own one that eats nearly everything i feed it
issc mk22 will be a scar clone 22LR will be released sometime may or june
& will be my next rifle purchaseLast edited by dodge; 03-02-2010, 6:11 PM.sigpic

Key is terget
The key is you said target shooting and I think you mean serious accurracy. That means bolt action, they are more accurate out of the box. If you have the money, Cooper or Anshutz. If you want to spend less the next choice is the CZ 453 it has a better trigger than the 452 recomended earlier. If you want cheap The savage with the button rifled barrels they put on their rifles is the best tech. They also have the accu trigger. I just bought the savage BTVS, to heavy for the field but wonderful accuracy. Get the one without the bull barrel for the field.Comment

Its not a super cool sniper .22, but I have a Henry Lever Action that's freakin awesome. I decided on a lever action so that I could rock Colibri and CB's (which won't cycle a semi) and got the youth model. Nice and short.
Has eaten everything I've fed through it, both .22LR and short, and I think the fullsize ones will take magnums in the tube. Accurate to minute-of-cokebottle to 50 yards out of the box.Comment

I would only recommend the 10/22 if you want to buy a lot of aftermarket stuff for it.
IF you just want to have a nice factory shooter, the Marlin 60 (tube fed) or 795 (mag fed) are better choices. There is a bunch of Marlin aftermarket stuff to if you want spend just a little more money. I don't.
I have all three rifles and the 10/22 spends more time in the safe than the Marlins'."CGF, so powerful we must be the NRA"

Most people who say "target shooting" mean shooting at targets because they don't hunt. Most people who say "my gun is a tack driver" use a rifle with a scope at 50 yards and a handgun at 7 yards and easily impress themselves. Most people get enamored with the look of the gun and not its inherent function, ergonomics or accuracy. Most people talk about the "beauty" of their walnut stock while not being able to hit a 12" circle at 100 yards. The key is you said target shooting and I think you mean serious accurracy. Asking a newbie what he wants to do with his gun is a waste of time. My advice is get whatever you want at the moment and after you shoot it for a while you will figure out what you really want and what you will do with it.
When you get some trigger time under your belt you will find that a bolt action enforces good shooting habits while a semi-auto ensures a high round count ;-)Using C Products 10 round magazines in my AR-15...just to be "safe"...Comment

100% anecdotal evidence here, but:
My 2010-manufactured 10/22 is made of plastic, railroad ties and balsa wood, and gets baseball-sized groups from a rest at 50 yards. I can gripe about the 11-pound trigger, as well.
Alternatively, my CZ 452 Lux is made of billet steel, has pretty good iron sights and a very crisp trigger, and gets nickel-sized groups from a rest at 100 yards with mini-mags on a non-windy day. It cost about twice as much as the 10/22, but if you can quantify quality, it's at least five times better.
Moral of the story? You get what you pay for.Last edited by asme; 03-03-2010, 9:22 PM.Comment

My favorite and most reliable .22 is my remington nylon 66 with a 6x scope(.22lr). It holds thirteen rounds and is semi-auto. And best of all, it's really simple to use. I can group all thirteen shots within a quarter sized area with almost no effort.well i want to buy a new .22 rifle and need some recommendations, my .22 now is an old Winchester .22 mag model 275 with an older than dirt Bushnell 4x scope, this is the gun my grandpa gave me when we used to shoot squirrels as a kid and its time to upgrade.
any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
