    Thoughts on .17 HMR?

Just bought a Savage .17 HMR. Haven't shot it yet, but I like the looks of the cartridge. Any thoughts from shooters on the accuracy, distance, and striking power of this caliber?

VERY accurate cartridge. With 5 shots, I get consistent 1/4" groups at 50 yds and 1/2"-3/4" groups at 100yds, depending on wind.
I currently have a Marlin 917V, but I have heard the Savage .17HMR rifles are supremely accurate as well.

you already bought it and dont know anything about it? well, its a little bit of a badass you will love it.

accuracy is spot on, and they don't call it the 'hummer' for nothin'. Its devastating on critters.

We spent about 5 hours yesterday shooting ground squirrels up above Jenny Lind. My buddy had his Savage in .17HRM, I was using one in .17Mach2, but also had my T/C Contender carbine configuration in .204 Ruger. We took a bunch of squirrels, and at one point a coyote ran across the field we were working in. I covered him with my .204 while my buddy took him out with the .17. Not the best round for that big an animal, hence the .204 back up, but it stopped him and finished him with a follow up shot. Pretty impressive what the .17s were doing to the little guys. Entry wounds (not exits) were leaving masses of intestinal parts hanging out. Very destructive little rounds.

i love my savage 17hmr. one of my favorite rifles to shoot. if i may make a suggestion, try every type of ammo you can get your hands on, to see which one your rifle likes. it seems like every rifle has a favorite. i made the mistake of stocking up on a bunch online without testing it, and it was not the best in my rifle. lucky for me, the cci tnt's that are always crowding the shelves at walmart do really well.

Oh, it's not like I don't know anything about it. I remember my uncle talking about shattering a doe's skull with one, and eventually selling it to a rancher he knew as a quicker way to put down his cattle. I just haven't shot one yet.

I picked up several boxes of both cci 17hmr rounds available at Walmart, including the tnt's. Just need to mount a scope and find some time to take it out.

                Define "inexpensive".

No such thing as "bulk" 17HMR. All comes in 50rnd plastic boxes.
The thing with firearms is that they are not like any other consumer product, simple ownership of one carries a lot of responsibility.

                    Any better deals than Walmart?

I seriously doubt it, I cant recall one place that has ever beat their price for .17 or carried as much.

I use a .17HMR out to 100 or 125 yards or so when there is no wind on the smaller Belding ground squirrels. once the wind comes up the .17HMR gets put away and I use a .204 Ruger. I usually try for head shots with the .17HMR and even with a solid head shots the squeaks will flop all over the place. when hit with the .204 Ruger they are dead right now. another nice thing about the .17 HMR is you will have very few or no richochets compared to .22 LR. the .17 HMR is a lot quieter than centerfire rifles.

One thing I like about the .17 HMR is that it's just plain fun to shoot. It's not too loud, no recoil.. and accurate as I need it to be. It's a light round, so the wind will push it around a bit though...

I like my HMR, it shoots well but my MII shoots better and is semi auto. Semi auto is great but you will shoot it like the semi that it is and this can get expensive compared to a plain old 22 fast

I came in late to the whole 17HMR party and took a chance on a CZ Model 452 Varmint after reading reviews and researching the 17HMR cartridge itself.
I used to use a Remington bolt gun w/heavy barrel to shoot 22 subsonic ammo at squirrels. Silent (kinda) and deadly.
This new rifle will do MASSIVE damage to these varmints and will get kills out to 150 yards w/no wind.
Lots of good times can be had with a good rifle chambered in 17HMR.
