22/45 mk111 ruger

i get to pick up my 22/45 tomorrow . its new . its my first semi auto .22 pistol . it has the 5.5 barrel .any tips from other ruger owners about this pistol. i have ben told these are the .22 that all others are judged agenst. i try to only shoot good ammo. but any advice on this gun would be cool . i was thinking about putting a red dot on it eventually . like a aim point . i have even seen a walter optic sight for like 23 bucks new . what do y'all think . any thing i need to know about this gun i got it to teach my chick to shoot a hand gun . well thats what i told her. thanks for any tips

Regardless, learn how to disassemble/reassemble your Ruger and you'll be able to do what 95% of Ruger auto owners can't do. Youtube is your friend. They're really not that picky about ammo either, regardless of what you read on the net. Light oiling, don't over do it. Rimfires are dirty. Clean often, light oil, be happy.

That pistol and the Buckmark are the 22LR all others try to beat. I think the Buckmark and the MK's are neck to neck. I own both and I like the buckmark more just because of the grip. But upon dependability, both are insanlely dependable and will eat anything you feed it. YOu dont have to baby it. My BuckMark II has eaten 12 bricks of 550 without cleaning, the MK has eaten 6 333 brick and 2 550 bricks without a hitch. Im trying to see when they will give up...so far, its still firing...dirty as hell though.

I also recommend you educate yourself how to disassemble/reassemble the pistol, it can be a challenge with just the manual.

If you go to the Ruger site http://ruger.com/resources/videos.html# look for the "tech tips" tab, click on it and look for the mark III section, it will have: disassemble, cleaning and reassembly. I found these videos to be invaluable. Keep in mind that you don't need to fully remove the barrel every time you clean it, I went 3yrs or roughly 5000 rounds before I ever took mine off for a thorough cleaning, you can clean it well enough with some patience. I have heard that taking the barrel on and off can cause some rigidity problems.

Don't worry about shooting an expensive ammo, shoot what it likes, ANYTHING! Enjoy your ruger.

thanks for the tips. i acctually was in the mountians yesterday and took a spill and jacked up my shoulder so besides not being able to type well i am trying to do it with one hand . i was just trying to make sure what i typed could be understood. any way cant wait to be able to move my arm again so i can shoot it. thanks again

+1 on the folks' opinions that the Ruger Mk series pistols will eat just about anything you feed them. I can't attest for how long they work while still dirty, I run a a wet brush and patches through until clean. I don't have a Buckmark but my MkII has gobbled up everything I've ever fed it with no problems.

As for re assembly. My 'Aha!' moment came when I realized at the moment you insert the mainspring housing (part A00900) and swing into position, the hammer strut (part A01000) must be hanging free in the recess and should fit into the dimple on the top of the mainspring housing. You should feel a slight amount of spring pressure start as the mainspring housing moves into place which is the strut and housing coming into contact. I hope I'm explaining it because it's hard to visualize until you see it (and it can be tough to see it because if you hold the pistol upside down while doing this the hammer strut won't hang and the magic won't happen).

You made a wise choice, the MKIII's are awesome. I'll reiterate was others have said; After break-in your Ruger should feed most ammo including cheap bulk, practice breaking it down, and buy the Ultimate Clip-loader and extra mags. Then plink away!

Great gun! My first gun was a Mark II 22/45. I shoot whatever I can get cheap by the brick and have never had a jam in over 10,000 rounds. Learn how to take it apart, clean it every time you use it, and it will last forever.
