I had a 10/22 years ago. Very good rifle. You can't really compare the Savage to the 10/22 since the Ruger is a semi-auto while the Savage is bolt action. I bought it mostly for the kids to shoot with since it forces you to take your time. Semi-autos in the hands of kids become speed shooting extravaganzas that don't build good shooting skills.

By kids I mean men of any age ;-)

Really, that is a great point. Because most shooters don't hunt and do not understand the importance of taking our time we just lob rounds down range thinking the more the better. While banging away is fun, having the skill and patience to hit our target with one shot is much more sastifieing.

I am not sure I would consider that thought. Ruger makes an excellent bolt action, the 77/22. CZ makes some very nice bolt action rimfires as well. Bolt actions are a different breed since they are so simple in their design and function and typically aren't picky about ammo. As a manufacturer you would really have to go out of your way to make a bad bolt action rimfire rifle.

What attracted me to the Savage was the overall package; composite stock, magazines, and the accu-trigger, mine is set as low as it goes which they say is around 2.5 pounds. It is positively sublime!

My older son doesn't bother with the magazines, he just sticks the rounds in the chamber, it's actually faster than loading the mags...try that with a semi-auto rifle ;-)

I load single rounds even though I have a 5 round mag...like he said above, it just turns out being much quicker. Plus, what I did at the range yesterday.....I would never try in a semi auto since everything is nice and secured in front of the bolt and nothing shy of a nuclear .22 explosion would cause damage. I was shooting my .22 bolt action(1978 Romanian Trainer), when I discovered some old .22 rounds that had gotten stuck in between a crack in the table. These things were corroded and had oxidized the round to the case like glue. Naturally, I stuck them inside my chamber and fired them.....lol.

bolt action and lever action are pretty similar I would think. I do like the bolt idea, similar to 308 models too.
