I would second this suggestion and futher suggest you consider the .17HM2 round as it is flat out to 100 yards and accurate well beyond. It is also as cheap to shoot as 22 LR. I have one with a Mueller scope mounted up to it and I love it. Can wait to get it out this weekend for some ground rats. Also great for punching paper.

Savage Mark 2 bolt action rifle with composite stock and accu-trigger will set you back about $175 and is as accurate as they come. I have a $40 3-9 scope from Walmart and this thing is impossible to miss with at under 100 yards.

HM2 is at least 3x more expensive to shoot than .22LR especially considering that there is no reason to buy anything other than bulk pack .22 for fun pinking.

17hm2 runs 3.50-4.00 per box. Thats no more than CCI minimag and its a lot more accurate and fun to shoot.

HM2 is at least 3x more expensive to shoot than .22LR especially considering that there is no reason to buy anything other than bulk pack .22 for fun pinking.

With good match ammo in a good gun, you can expect 5" to 8" groups at 200yds from a 10/22.
You can also expect several feet of wind drift.

I have a MKII-G, CZ452, Marlin 795, and 2, 10/22s and I can say that I love my bolt actions and my done up 10/22 the most. I like the CZ452 over the MKII-G because the action feels smoother, but the MKII-G is hadds down a bang for the buck. Out of the box the rifle is much more accurate than the 10/22. 10/22 will take some $$ to make accurate.

Most decent .22 rifles with some accurizing can get to one moa at 100 yards. My Remington 597, CZ 452 and Browning 52 all do.
I did put an odd thing, a temporary .22 liner in a long barreled single shot rifle It is made by Lee Shaver and sits in the barrel snugly. You eject with a little screw driver. I was amazed as to how accurate it was at 200 yards. Guys shoot 200 yard silhouettes with these things and little steel silhouette targets. Some make dedicated.22 rifles.
Shooting a .22 at 200 yards is quite like shooting a slow 45-70 at 500 meters. A little like a mortar. Quite a trajectory.
That said, I would like to see how well a .22 mag handles 300. If it's going 2000fps, it might do okay. The main problem is the little bullets have low Ballistic coefficients and shed speed rapidly.
Get a nice .22. free float the barrel, glass bed the action and the first two inches of barrel at the receiver and start trying different ammo until you like the groups.
A Savage 93, A CZ 452 are two nice bolt guns.
