Polish it! Strip the rest of the 'finish' off of it, and start polishing it up! Make it bling blang!

Krylon will just come off like the original finish. Get it Anodized.

I did the same thing on one of my 10/22's. One you can take it to a local powder coat shop and they can refinish it. Or there is many places online that do Dura coating which I heard is very durable and has many color choices. You can even buy it and apply it yourself if you have a compressor, and a air gun.

O man that used to be my gun. .

I say just duracoat it. ATI will do nothing as they tell you not to use certain cleaners or to test your solvent in an are that is not noticeable.

Gun blast is a acetone base, it will remove most painted finishes and clear coat finishes on wood stocks I've even heard it has rubbed off duracoat.

Yes, Danielp59. It was. I messed it up already. Anyone local you know that can Duracoat it?

No you'd have to buy it and do it yourself. The prep is the longest part of the process. If you take your time in prep you'll have great results.

If you just want a finish for the time being. You can use Krylon Camouflage spray paint in ultra flat black. I used 3 coats on my mini 14 stock and its a pretty tough finish.
If you choose to spray paint it with Krylon, make sure you fully disassemble the gun and sand it with wet/dry sand paper. Read the directions on the can because it states you must let the paint set for 7 days for it to be scratch resistant
I've heard of others using Engine Enamel with good results as well.

If the finish is really messed up and you want to take it down to bare metal you can use airplane paint stripper to strip the paint. You can find airplane paint stripper at your local auto parts store. If you decide to use the stripper be careful where you spray it. That stuff is really strong. I've used it to strip powder coating off car parts before.

Also today or this week is not a good time to start a project like this as the moisture in the air doesn't let the paint dry correctly.

                              good ol' walmart gun cleaner.

I know that ATI guarantees their nickel finish, but i dont know to what extend

If I can have them refinish for free then great. Otherwise Duracoat is my next option.
