This is wrong. ATI did not lose the case. H&K made them an offer and they accepted it and the case was settled.

Umarex does NOT make the Colt, Carl Walther Germany does. Umarex only imports them.

I don't like the looks of it. I don't like the rail and especially the front sight.

Looks are a big thing with these tacticool .22s, at least for me.

Good to know they can still make them though. Do these have a top cover like AKs, so it can easily be popped off and switched with a non-railed one?

The rep at arfcom mentioned that they will still be selling the original gsg parts, so that you can convert it to the old look.

I haven't taken mine apart yet, but I'm pretty sure you have to open up the receiver to swap the rail/mount.

I'm glad I bought my GSG5 a few months ago. I don't like most of the new additions on the GSG522.
-The rail adds more weight, mostly unnecessary for those with smaller optics.
-The sling loop on the trigger guard would put the rifle upside down and almost horizontal when hanging from a single-point sling (though it might be OK for a pistol).
              -The lower markings are ugly.

Even though you can retrofit the old parts, it will probably cost more than what I paid for my last generation GSG5.

Still, I'm glad GSG found a way to still make these. Makes me feel better knowing the internals are the same and I can still get parts/service for my gun.

Yes, it does. UMAREX owns Walther.

In 1993 the Walther firm was acquired by Umarex of Arnsberg, who continued to manufacture under the Walther name in Ulm and Arnsberg.

H&K won the lawsuit and it was settled.
H&K then contracted Umarex to make licensed .22LR copies of the HK416, MP5 and MP7.
Meanwhile, GSG altered the appearance of the GSG5 and renamed it the GSG522.
ATI is set to import the GSG522.

The SHOT Show will bring info about release dates & MSRP for both the ATI/GSG and the H&K/Umarex .22LR clones.
Basically correct but a little confused.

Through some deal(s) (I think am not sure) Walther is making an HK-licensed MP5 clone in 22lr that Umarex will be importing.
GSG's clone was competition so HK sued either ATI, GSG or both for TRADE DRESS infringement (any trademarks on the MP5 have long since run out).
The parties mutually settled the lawsuit, nobody won a trial because there was none.
By the mutually agreed terms, The GSG5 could no longer be imported after 1/31/2010.

As an aside, trademarks protect the identity of the origin of goods in the marketplace. They are intended to protect the consumer so that he knows the source of goods and can be confident that goods he purchased before have the same source now as they did the last time and thus he can have confidence in the quality or lack thereof.

Trade dress refers to the good will a provider of goods has built up due to his history of providing goods of known quality. When someone infringes the look of your goods in selling other goods, they are stealing the good will you have built up in the marketplace and through this theft, are inducing buyers to purchase their goods under the assumption that they are your goods or are of similar quality to your goods because they look like your goods. A subtle be real difference that makes major sense in $$$$$$.

why did the have to name it the GSG522...

I think that is going to create confusion with the Sig 522

wonders who the next lawsuit will be with

i figured gsg was in the works to continue their sales w/all the demand usa has commanded over the last year or so
good luck w/that & hope they don't end up in another legal situation as sig is surely not gonna appreciate the 'connection'

by the way, did hold a titanium gsg5 today, but was first generation & didn't feel as 'toylike' as i'd imagined. if they use better material for the upper it should make for a fun little shooter

FYI. The factory "titanium" GSG5 are 3rd generation.

On AR-15.com they said you can remove the rail, and the overall gun weights less.

Conversion kits might be retailing around $50. So, assuming they keep the price at $450 or so and $50 conversion kits, it will not be that bad.

how come no one is happy about this line:

The GSG522PK with light weight receiver making it less than 50oz and legal for sale in NY. I don't have a pic yet but we also have the GSG522PK Single Shot with a bullet button, making it legal for sale in CA as a single shot. Hang out for your 10 day once you get one and it still operates with regular GSG Magazines. I'm sure we'll all have plenty of discussions about this in the near future. We tried not to forget about you CA.
