    HELP! with my 10/22

I just bought all the pieces (used) and put it together yesterday... today i took it to the range, and it was failing to fire 5-6 out of every mag... very annoying!

I noticed that all the rounds that werent firing, were being struck, but it didnt seem like the firing pin was hitting enough of the rim, im comparing this to all my other spent casings from my other 22's.. I was thinking the firing pin may be damaged due to dry firing.. so i took it all apart but it looks to be in good condition.

What do you think? could it be the firing pin? the hammer strength? all of the above? i want to buy the parts to fix it, but i dont want to throw away the money on parts i dont need..

While were in the mood of helping me.. When i was taking apart the receiver.. i noticed what a crappy job Ruger did on painting/powdercoating or wtf they did to finish the reciver piece.. I can scrape off the inside coating with little effort. I want to remedy this also, as long as i have it all apart. Im thinking of just stripping the whole reciever and painting it (i doubt i could do worse than ruger did... <barf> ). any thoughts? I was also thinking to just strip it and polish the crap out of the bare aluminum.. (like 2 hours with a wheel & dremeland a six pack later) Has anyone done this? if it was steel i would just re-blue it.

scrap all that crap out of the inside of the receiver and polish it a little
I was careful enough to save the finish on the outside and the polish job helps with keeping it clean
as far as the light strikes I bet you were getting that chipped paint in there

Aircraft stripper from your local auto parts store or Walmart.

I dont think i need to use any harsh abrasives, i think i could use a toothbrush to remove this stuff... its soo loose. So nobody thinks its the firing pin or light hammer?

thats the stock trigger, stock reciever, stock bolt & pin.. only after market stuff to date is the barrel and the stock. I eventually want to do the trigger cause it feels like im pulling on the trigger guard rather than the trigger its soo heavy.

I suspect the bolt is not fully closing every time.
Get rid off all the loose paint inside the receiver.
Clean off all bolt parts including the firing pin and its groove.
Make sure the recoil spring guide rod surface is reasonably smooth.
I have seen some recent production guide rods that are so rough they almost seem threaded.
Polish smooth or replace as needed.
A drop or two of oil on the recoil spring and rod is best.

I was also suspecting the bolt wasnt closing while i was at the range.. so i tryed pushing it forward.. then hitting it forward to make sure.

                    stand by for more pics.

Clean all that stuff out like Ohjisan said.

My new one get's better and better with more ammo through it... My old one is actually worse but the trigger group is higher quality. BUT having said that I was able to make the newer trigger group work best and get all that crazy creep out which in tunr made it far lighter...

                      Love my new one now...

Auto bolt release on both of those too... Did the mods myself.

                      FUN and CHEAP!!!

Ya this is what im lookin at, my dremel is gonna be sweating this weekend.

I also dont like this at all... the bolt is crappy and rough with dimples and a texture to it...
Im thinking of taking a 300 grit to it and smoothing it out, then putting a high polish on it.. even if it doesnt help (which i cant see how that texture would ever help anything) at least it will look bichin

After stripping the receiver, I think the best looking end result I have seen is just to leave it as a brushed aluminum and have it clear powder coated.. The ones that I have seen done this way look very clean and very cool!

powder coated!?!?!?!?! heck thats alot easier and i could get it done in high gloss black! What about just engine block paint? cheaper and less work. dont really want a stainless receiver on this one... maybe on next build.
