60 grain Aguila and barel twist?

I was thinking that 60 grain Aguila Sniper Subsonic might be the perfect thing for my Remington 41p.

Then I read that it needs a fast twist to stabilize.

I have no idea what the twist of the rifling is.

Does any one know what twist Remington was using back in the late 30's?

I have no idea but its usually 1:16 with current barrels. I would just get some and shoot it at 5 25 50 and 100 to see if its on target and if it keyholes.

I have shot this round in a custom bolt action 22lr with a match barrel with 1:9 twist which was designed just to shoot this round, with a suppressor and man all you hear is the hammer drop.

I cant find this stuff locally. I want to try it in my ar15 /22 conversion with 1:7 twist.

you need a 1:9" bbl in order to stabilize the 60 grain subsonic accurately. You will be surprised at how well those rounds shoot in the 1:9" bbl.

so, I've never seen what happens to 40gr ammo in a fast twist barrel. Does it just freak out and shoot wild?

I've had good luck with this round in 1:16 inch twist barrels at 50 yards. I didn't expect to have any real accuracy in the slower twist barrel and was shocked when the rounds fired into a sub inch group.

I think I'll give it a shot but I'll see if I can use a patch and a cleaning rod to get an idea of the twist.

actually no, 40 gr and 36 gr bullets get about 3-4" groups with my 1:7 twist 5.56 barrel. They dont go crazy.. but they are nothing next to accurate.

                As a general rule, you can't over-stabilize a bullet.

Now, pure lead bullets moving at a fast velocity in a barrel with too high of a twist rate can definitely disintegrate upon leaving the barrel, but good quality jacketed bullets of the 36/40gr weight can be stabilized and shoot accurately out of a barrel with a 1/7 twist.

That's more than likely due to the fact that you're shooting .22 bullets out of a .223 barrel and the 2" of smoothbore that they have to travel before hitting rifling

.22 conversion kits are NOT accurate. That's the reason for a dedicated upper.

                    I tried it out.

The report was louder than the air gun like sound of Super Colibri but a lot quieter than regular velocity. With my earplugs in I had to check the barrel to see if the first round had made it out because I couldn't hear it over the other noise at the range.

I'm not sure about accuracy. I only shot 20 rounds at the 7 or 10 yard pistol range. All but two or three were in the X ring but I had to aim at the left side of the ring to hit the center, either the POI changed or my rear sight might have got dinged, I need to try it at a longer distance.

My gut feeling is that it's stabilized thanks to the very long barrel. I didn't check the twist. It will be interesting to see if it is accurate at longer range but that will have to wait for the next trip...

Volquartsen makes a barrel specially desinged to get the most from this round. A friend of mine bought one of their 10/22 type rifles specifically designed around this cartridge. I was extremely impressed with both its accuracy and design.

We shooting squirls in an open field. I challenged him to tap one out past 200 yards with the volquartsen shooting the SSS round. That poor little guy was at around 300 yards when that round smacked him in the chest. It flipped him in the air and he came down looking left and right like he was thinking "what the heck was THAT!". Better than cable TV...

We did disover that it does not put down squirls (within 150 yards or less) as well as remington subsonic HP's do. Because of this, I never personally invested in a Volquartsen barrel to fire it. My freind sold his Volquartsen 10/22 that was set up for the round about a year later because of the dismal terminal effects of the round on squirls.

I have tried it from several other 10/22's set up to use more common subsonic ammo and received varried results. My 22/45's, Ruger Mark II's and single six love it.
