    Best Ammo for 10/22

Have a two year old 10/22 stainless. My biggest problem is that it consistantly jams up. Sometimes one round will jam in between the cycle and sometimes two rounds get caught up between the barrel and ejector.
Any Ideas? Some ammo works better and some ammo doesnt work at all.
Is this an ammo issue or should I get some smithwork done?
    Thanks for any info.

What type of magazine are you using?

Ammunition shouldn't be a factor when shooting 10/22s. I've shot almost everything I could find through my 10/22 with very few problems.

If it's been 2 years, to what extent have you cleaned the 10/22?
Ruger switched from anodizing the receivers a few years ago to just painting them (yes, this includes the "stainless" ones as well -- it's just silver paint).

After the first 500 or so rounds, the paint often flakes off inside the receiver from the bolt recoil and starts gumming things up.

There's no reason to pay a smith to take a look at something as simple as the 10/22. Before replacing anything, his first job will likely be to disassemble the rifle and give it a thorough cleaning.

      * Open the rifle up, remove the trigger group, and remove the bolt.
      * Pay special attention to cleaning up the guide rod (the thing with the spring on it that the bolt rides on). If the rifle short strokes (bolt doesn't go bar far enough), you can see the FTEs you see now.
      * Disassemble the bolt and give it a thorough cleaning.
      * You can also go ahead and polish various things inside the 10/22 (example: the bottom of the bolt and the guide rod so that it recoils smoothly).

Some people will recommend replacing the extractor. This is the claw that grabs the spent casing as the bolt recoils. I wouldn't bother replacing it until you try cleaning it first.

Visit rimfirecentral.com for everything you ever wanted to know about the 10/22.

One final comment: At one point, I was overzealous with polishing things and polished the top of the ejector (a metal tab that sticks up out of the trigger group and knocks the spent casing off the extractor and out of the receiver. Well, too much polishing didn't help the situation and I would get all kinds of FTEs until I replaced that part with another factory extractor.

The 10/22 will shoot anything well up to about 200-300 rds and then you MUST clean them of you will get some FTE and sometimes the bolt will cathc on the mag from grime build up on top of the bolt.

Shoot whatever and it will take it.

Try getting a volquartson extractor. They cost about $10 but they are much better than a ruger extractor. $10.95 here shipped http://www.gunkings.com/index.php?ma...roducts_id=396 Mark

Ditto the VQ extractor. A must-have for the 10/22 and Mk. I, II, III, and 22/45, especially since it's so cheap and easy to do. And ditto the cleaning. I'd bet that solves it.

And ammo definitely does make a difference. Keep trying different brands, especially if all you've been shooting is the value pack bricks. If you're shooting higher quality ammo (like CCI Mini-mags or Wolf ammo), it should run pretty well.

I think maybe something is not right with his and it may need some gunsmithing.. I say this because we have 3 in house and all around us (our neighbors and buddies) About 10-12 total and ALL feed any (even) the crap ammo fine...

You can make them perform better than they were designed and do it very cheaply.

I like CCI stingers, but, I have had my 10/22 since 1972 and my dad has had his since 1954 and they both run like champs..I'd say clean it and lightly grease. also, I have had some problems with some of the 30 rounder "banana clips"

did I just call a magazine a clip?

Triple ditto on the extractor... my last ruger extractor was to misshaped I was suprised it was even able to extract anything..... my oldest 10/22 has had it's VQ extractor in it for the last 5 yras and it has over 1200rnds through it with only a bolt face cleaning with a Q-Tip.. this rifle wil even function extremely well with sub-sonics....

my 10/22 don't like standard velocity (1000 to 1100 FPS) or match grade ammo. Plated bullet and with high velocity work best on mine. Oh, need to clean the receiver once a while! ;D

I know quite a few guys at our 22 matches that will disagree as the 10/22 is a very popular rifle with our shooters and they all run target ammo. The most popular ammo is Wolf MT.
I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

Are we talking about custom built match grade 10/22 or a off the shelf $299 stainless 10/22?

If you are using a stock magazine. Try another stock magazine. Borrow a stock magazine from a friend that is not having feed problems. This way you can see if it is a magazine issue or an action issue. I have 5 stock magazines. Four of the magazines feed all kinds of ammunition flawlessly and one wont feed the 10th round regardless of the ammunition. When I get around to it, I am going to take it apart and clean it to see if it helps. Sometimes the factory ones need a little love.
