They actually don't need a heavier bolt because the bolts were designed specifically for the 22WMR cartridge. It's probably twice the weight of the standard 10/22. Given the new warnings with 17HMR I wouldn't recommend any conversions but if you are going to do one, the 10/22M is probably the best semi out there to do it with. If you can find a 10/22M for a reasonable price (sub $1000) get it. I had been looking for years and a fellow calgunner sold me his. It was the best purchase I have ever made!

Actually, you should stop shooting .17HMR in ALL semi-autos immediately

If you read it again I believe it actually says to not use Remington 17HMR ammo in a semi-automatic 17HMR. It is also a recall on the 597 in 17HMR. Other ammo should be fine in other semi-automatic 17HMRs like the Volquartsen.

In that thread there is another link that further explains that all .17HMR ammo is not suitable for semis:

Yes you can. They have conversion kits for the 10/22 mag.

Apparently this isn't true for Volquartsen. It's their number one seller and they intend to continue to make their semi-auto 17HMRs.

                    Volquartzen .17HMR DELUXE

So I came across an opportunity to buy a Volquartzen .17HMR Semi-auto and I remembered coming across the warning about .17HMR semi-autos. Just wondering if anyone has had any problems with their VQ .17HMR semi? Any thoughts on this rifle? Pros? Cons?

500 rounds and no problems. Called VQ and they haven't had problems with this round in their guns.

I haven't seen it posted here (I may have missed it) but I heard that there is a safety issue with semi-auto .17 HMRs. Something about the safety of the ammunition?

I also remember Excel Arms being at the OC Gun Show. They are located somewhere in the Norco/Corona or somewhere in the IE. Cool rifles.

I believe the warning was for .17 mach 2 ammo; I do not recall reading any warnings on .17 HMR but I could have missed it.

Anyway here is a link to help you out; google the subject and you will get much more info.
