If you want the best accuracy that you can get with a .22LR AR, you'll want to build or buy a dedicated upper. I built my dedicated upper using a CMMG barrel and bolt, then added a BetterMag so that I can use S&W mags and have the bolt lock open on empty mags.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

Yes put together a dedicated upper..I use BD 50 round drums.. But for 25 rounders I like the SW 15-22 mags..They are the best part of the SW 15-22..

I myself do not care if I have LSHO..Not an issue for me at all not to. I just epoxy a little plastic tab on the SW mags and use them.. Easy to load and very dependable mags.

Buy yourself a Dedicated Bolt from PSA, RTB and a barrel and go to town.. Very easy to assemble it all yourself..That way you can use what handguard's, charging handle, optics or sights and such you want..In other words put it together the way you want it from the start.. Rather than buying a completed one and swapping out parts to your liking..That will be cheaper in the long run to assemble it all yourself..

Lots of good suggestions above. One question I have back at you is:

Do you value "Last round bolt hold open?" The reason I asked, is that a standard centerfire 5.56 AR-15 does that. Dedicated uppers and built-up .22LR AR conversions, well, don't do that without extra money and/or work. Yeah I know about better mags, I know about the 15-22 clips and plastic tabs, and I even have the dedicated .22LR bolt catch. But all that is extra money & work. It's easy to get a .22LR AR to not hold back after the last round, like a 10/22 does not do that. So if that's ok with you, go either route. If you want bolt-hold back, an S&W 15-22 does that right out of the box, and they're not expensive rifles.

If you value accuracy, don't buy the conversion kit.

I had one of those conversion kits. The biggest CON of those kits is the 5.56 NATO barrel. It's typically 1:7, 1:8, 1:9 twists, and the bore is set for 5.56 ammo. That's quite a bit different than the optimum twist for .22LR, which is somewhere in the 1:16. And that leads to inaccuracy - pretty bad accuracy for target use.

I have a few complete .22LR uppers and I think all of them work well - my favorite is the BCA with side-charging, because the bolt doesn't hold back BUT, side charging is similar to how a 10/22 operates so I like that part of it.

                Dedicated upper.
Tactical Solutions makes a pretty good one.

I have a cmmg 22lr kit that I put into an upper that was the wife?s. Removed gas tube and put gas block backwards. To block the gas port.
