Whether conventional grip or the bird's head pictured here, very comfortable in the hand. Fixed sights are fairly easy to see, SA trigger is clean and the DA a tad heavy. Which may be a good thing for a newer shooter.

Not too difficult to find in CA. And if outside are pretty much all roster exempt due to age.

This gun is about 60 years old, still functions perfectly.

          Ruger SP101 8-shot or GP100 10-shot SA/DA .22lr will last many lifetimes...

I would look at the S&W Model 63 or the Ruger SP101 in .22. Both are well-made, not overly large revolvers that should last a lifetime.

I remember going with my dad to the K-Mart in East Los Angeles in the mid 70s to get this gun. I think he paid about $70 for it. When you think about it , that was a lot of money for this gun back then.

9 shots of 22lr can do some damage..

What ever you get, I'm sure your daughter will love you for it. Kudos to you for keeping her interested...

It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

What the model# of the 6 or 8 shot aluminum j frame with a 3" barrel? 317? That would be a sweet gun for a youngin if you dont want SA. For SA I would find a Bearcat.

I would 3rd the Bearcat. Or a wrangler with a birds head grip if available.

no mystery I'm a vintage s&w fan although I do enjoy a wide variety of other colt, ruger, h&r rimfire revolvers including top breaks, single action, etc. for comparison in my own collection..

if you're a s&w fan, one of these would be a nice beginner and several offerings turn up on gunbroker regularly..

                    good luck in your search!

Definitely the 617, then. Same size and weight as any other K frame, ten shots, no recoil, very accurate. 4" is better balanced than the 6", which is a tad nose-heavy. I put a Dawson fiber sight on the front of mine, and use it for Steel Challenge. You can even get speed loaders and trays for them. It's crazy how fast you can burn though a brick of .22 with two 10 round speed loaders on the table.

Ruger or S&W, buy once cry once, and you can hand them down for generations. I have a 617 and a 1964 Single Six Convertible, it still shoots like new.
