Short range plinking with a scoped rifle?

I put a 2.5-8x scope on my CZ 512 semi-auto 22 magnum rifle. It's fun for target shooting but I kind of miss short range fast shooting, which I used to use it for with a red dot. Obviously I can slowly aim with the scope and hit targets at close range, but I want to do some "tactical" shooting as well. I want to use the 22 magnum for training the way others use a 9mm carbine. Targets would be about 20 yards away. Ammo would be Hornady V-max, which I've read is frangible, so it should be safe at short range. What should I do:

    1) Buy a Low Power Variable Optic
    2) Mount a red dot on top of the scope, or to one side
    3) Practice quick scoping targets at 2.5x
    4) Learn to hip fire the rifle
    5) Buy a 9mm rifle and put a red dot on it

I'll be keeping the CZ 512 no matter what I do - it's an excellent rifle. I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks folks!

I put a LPVO on an AR and it works well for short and longer ranges. Got a PA 1-8x with ACSS, the chevron and circle works well for getting a target quickly(haven’t done much fast shooting with it), though probably not the best for pinpoint precision at 100 yds or more, where crosshairs will be better IMO.

I'm no Rockefeller so I wouldn't rapid shoot with 22 magnums, but not my place to tell someone how to spend their money.

Where I am, 22 magnum costs about the same as 9mm. Pre-covid the prices were similar and not unreasonable.

If you have the distance, start real close up with one of those self healing ball type targets and see how far you can hit it without letting it sit static more than 5 seconds. After a while the distances will get longer and longer and the time will get shorter and shorter.

Once you get past 100 yards the scope comes in real handy when keeping the time down between shots.

Just don't do like the couple of guys I saw one time decide to get 300 yards apart and try to walk the ball back and forth between them. It was really something to see - in the rearview mirror.

You can mount a red dot sight on your rifle for short range fast shooting and when you want remount your scope for longer ranges. You may have some slight zero shift when changing your sight and scope but you have the versatility you seem to desire.

I think you’d be better off adding a Ruger 10/22 or similar to the mix and putting a red dot on it.

                i put a burris rt-6 (1-6 lvpo) on my 10/22.
it is surprising good for the price and i would recommend it for folks on a budget.

I do have a red dot on my full auto Crosman DPMS AR15 BB Gun Only red dot I own...

Only real use I see for a red dot for plinking, is if it was a rifle had no open sight option available on it if you remove the scope..Otherwise open sights have always sufficed for 50 yards and under plinking..Red dots do look tacticool though

You would probably be amazed at how many of the younger generation have never even shot a Rifle with sights, or have learned to use them correctly..

I made sure when I was teaching my kids to shoot at around 6 years old..That they learned open sights, before even contemplating a optic of any kind..

Since you will be shooting at targets 20 yards away, consider the parallax, otherwise you will be missing all over the place with an expensive scope and wondering what the hell is going on (jk). If you are dialing the power way down, then it shouldn't be a problem. There are some good discussions about rimfire rifle distances and scope parallax at rimfire central. I think a dedicated red dot is the most cost effective and lightest solution. Put the scope back on when you are shooting at 100 yards.

My club does 2 gun rimfire matches, and most of us use a red dot. We shoot out to about 50 yards, with some targets nearly touching the muzzle.

Now, which red dot....there are a lot of options for that.

I have a Romeo 5 that is fantastic and relatively cheap. It's great at 25 yards so I use it a lot at the indoor range. I also have a 512, but it gets a 3x32 tactical scope (for now). Perhaps because of the scope, I somehow wind up shooting it outdoors a lot more than indoors.

The Romeo 5 is my favorite sight option for fast offhand rimfire rifle shooting that I would have done with open sights when I was younger. They go together like peanut butter and chocolate. I shoot a lot indoors, so I'm probably going to buy another one so I can have it on both my 10/22 and my 512.

Pitchers mound to home plate distances don't require a optics/gear changes IMO.
Even a basic 4x and a good cheek weld will do this service all day or until the ammo carton is empty.

Basic steel sights? Paint your front sight if needs be.

*the closer I shoot I make sure to use smaller targets. Soda cans, shotgun shell hulls, pine cones, dirt clods, stale crackers, the list is endless.

                              CZ512 & 1-4X scope & 22mag = fun toy

I would be shooting 22mag now for fun shooting unless you already had a stash.
