I have an older 39A, look for one. I paid $100 for a well maintained ’64.

Reading posts like this one awakens my "want" button and iniciates a trip to the local gun shops.
I want a Marlin 39A, I thought, took a drive and to my delight found a very nice sample "R" serial, puts it at around 1957 because of the low numerals.
Another thing that is very nice about it is an inlay on the forearm, a diamond shape Ivory and Ebony very nicely done.
It is in jail at the moment, can not wait to shoot it!!

My only complaint about the Marlin 39a is that they never made it in 22 Mag. Other than that, they are one of the best 22 lever guns ever made. I've won a lot of matches with mine, and I have another as a backup just in case. :-)

I think the Winchester 9422's are prettier, but the Marlin 39 is the one I shoot when I'm shooting to win.
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

The 39A, though the best .22 Lever Gun ever made in my opinion, I do not think is quite strong enough to handle the 22 Magnum round..It was just not designed for it.

Now the other Lever action Levermatics from Marlin have been made in .22 Magnum.. That is a strong locking action..

The 9422 is a good looking lever gun..But there are 39A models made that I think are better looking..I prefer the looks of the straight stocked 39s than the pistol grip models.. Such as the 1897 Cowboy with straight grip and octagon barrel..I would take that one for sure over any 9422..

I would own a Cowboy or Texan, but I cannot get past the stupid cross bolt safeties..

I have a couple of Marlin levers with the cross-bolt safety. I just ignore them. If they bother you, just look for older models. They are out there and worth the search.

One thing I didn't elaborate on is my work on the trigger and lever. In stock form, the inside and outside edges of the lever and the front edge of the trigger have sharp edges. On my 336, they are rounded and smooth.

So I took the gun apart and started rounding the edges. I found out quickly that both the lever and trigger were super hardened, hardly anything would touch them. Files slipped right off, Dremel grinding stones wore out quickly and had little effect. I ended up using emery paper of various grades and even wet sanded using kerosene.

This took hours and hours and I thought my arms were going to fall off. But once I started, I knew I would need to finish the job. I eventually got them smoothed to my satisfaction. I took the lever to a gunsmith in Stockton who I knew had a very sophisticated hot bluing process in his shop (he had re-blued a 12 gauge shotgun receiver for me previously and the results were fantastic). I then took the trigger to a jewelry fabrication shop (again in Stockton) and had the trigger 24 carat gold plated.

The bluing on the lever matched the polishing and re-bluing on all of the rest of the steel parts that was done much later.

                      Here is the result:

There was a new one on GB a week or two ago. I really prefer the new wood over the older ....

That one looks like it came out of the custom shop.
