New Marlin 39

Hey fellas, I'm looking for reviews of the Marlin 39s made in the early to mid 2000s...
Specifically 2005-2008. I think these were the last years before Remington took charge and canned them (other then custom shop)

I really like the wood on these guns but I have no experience with them....

Just wondering if anybody has any hands on experience with these....

A friend of mine bought one of them in that time frame. It was his first lever action and he loved it so much he got a Marlin 1894, a 39M Mountie, a 336, and finally an 1895. I think he sold the 1895 but kept the others.

His Model 39 is a great gun; no problems at all. That and his 1894 are what got me hooked on lever actions myself.

Though I surely prefer the older ones..It will likely be a good enu of Firearm..I hate the cross bolt safety and rebounding hammer on the newer ones..I only buy the older ones myself, pre rebound/cross bolt..But the older JMs are getting pricey now..

They are very much worth spending the time to look for a good example. They are out there and a bit spendy but very much worth it in the long run. With minimum decent care, they will last almost forever.

Solid, hardened, forged steel receiver, bolt, lever and trigger, Marlin did not skimp on the design or fabrication of the 39 series, they paid as much attention to these as they did their center fire lever guns and it shows.

You put one up to your shoulder and there is nothing like it. I bought mine new in early 1977 and had it extensively refined by a top local gunsmith. Mine came with a plain stock, he fitted and hand rubbed a checkered walnut stock, had all of the steel parts polished and deep re-blued. I smoothed the action myself as well as rounding off the sharp edges on the lever and trigger. I also had the trigger 24 carat gold plated.

I have a non-Mountie Mountie from the 50's as I prefer the carbine length. Not a showpiece, but pretty good shape (metal is all clean). I keep my eye out for a replacement straight stock on occasion, but it's still a shooter and a lot of fun. Holds a lot of shorts...haha.

I have a 1951 Model 39A that I've obtained XS Sights Systems ghost ring irons for. Randall/ar15barrels installed them for me since the receiver needed to be drilled and tapped. This 39A is quickly becoming the only rifle I want to shoot, and I love shooting my .357, .41 and .44 Marlin 1894s, the 1895, the 336 Texan Carbine, my .308 Ruger Scout, my CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62 short... they're all wonderful long guns in their own right.



My friends Mark and Tom and myself started the Mojave Lever Crew and Tom brought his 39A to our inaugural meeting 2.5 years ago. Been wanting one ever since.

I've only recently revisited rimfire shooting and it is just too much fun. I have a couple of three-screw Single Sixes and one of those nifty 85%-sized Browning 1911-22s in the Commander model proportion.

Chris, I had that 39A out today, just wiping it down with some Rem-Oil with a couple other guns. My FAVORITE .22lr to shoot, no doubt.
