My most humorous HS story about refs and guns was in Cross Country.

Had a meet on a clammy foggy morning around Lincoln City Oregon.
Ground was soaked- as the area had had good mild soaker rain for 3-4 days.

    Very muddy.

To start us on this race through the valley and up through the forest the ref used a black powder rifle with just wadding.

Half of us just 'froze' for a split second because the sound was so intense [especially echoing off fog and hills]. The other half slipped in the mud and fell, then we all started running.

That definitely didn't sound like a starter's pistol [or a .22 hollow point]!
Where did all the range-time go?

Midway had one set of Black Grips marked down to 15.00..Cheap enough so thought I would see how they look..Not too bad..

Not to some peoples taste..But I like this little pistol..Dependable, accurate and fun to shoot..Thanks
