Call me crazy, but this WallMart special has been rad on my 17:

Hadn’t Shot it in over two years. I pulled it out of the safe and took it to the range this last weekend. I was consistently hitting little 1 inch chips of clays at 100 yards.

Depends on what you are shooting at and what your rifle is capable of. My last trip to the range, I was using a 14x scope shooting at 1" targets at 50 yards. The guys next to me were shooting a Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor struggling at 50 yards. They had a spotting scope and was still going up to the targets on every cease fire to figure where they hit.

      Attached is a 6 feet x 6 feet target at 1000 yards on 20X.

I shot this using the 4-16 40mm Centerpoint on a Savage few years back. Still have it. And I didn't crank it all the way to 16.

Have a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 on mine, not sure what replaced that scope now though.
