Saw a couple of videos on this gun-looks interesting

Looks awesome. But don't like the safety or the loading unloading percedure.

Couple years back I went to go get the regular heritage. Just seemed toy level quality to me. Ended up buying a Wrangler.

Because the Heritage Arms Barkeep series has a 2.68" barrel, it does not qualify for the SAE (which requires a minimum barrel length of 3").

Therefore, a CA FFL dealer can only legally transfer it via other exemptions (LEO sale, out-of-state intra-familial/operation-of-law transfer, PPT).

            IMO...

It's not worth the extra cost to acquire it in CA, due to it's non-exempt off-Roster status.

There are better rimfire revolvers you can get for the amount of money you will end up paying to get one via PPT in CA.

The closest you can get easily in CA is the 3.5" birdshead - I have one of these.

The nice thing about this compared to the barkeep, is you get a real ejector. With the Barkeep you're gonna need to find a stick to eject emptys. The birdshead is only ~0.75" longer and it comes standard with both cylinders (22WMR/22LR) for essentially the same price. The barkeep only comes with 22LR, the 22WMR cylinder is extra $$

My LGS has 3 of them. and I m happy to say they are for sale...except the one I bought. And since it's single action, it's NOT on the roster

I bought this Cobra derringer at Turners a couple years ago, it has a 2.75" barrel. i.e < 3" . Is there a different CA barrel length rule for a derringer vs revolver?

I've had a lot of fun and no trouble with my 4.75" Heritage, very easy to swap cylinders between LR and WMR.
That 3.5" with birdshead grip model looks very handy to me. Would make a nice backpacker with the 22WMR cyl.

                      Looks cute.
But not sure I can hit the broadside of a barn with that little gun.

If your LGS is selling these in CA to non-LEO, they are breaking the law.

There is a different length rule - a derringer has to be a single shot, and have a 6" or longer barrel and be 10.5" or longer overall to be roster exempt.

The Cobra was on roster up until last month, and so did not need to be of a roster exempt dimension. That is why you were able to buy it. But so far this year, all of Cobra is now off roster - who knows if they will be coming back on.

I have seen a few YouTube gun people talk about it for ccw, and I am nothing but confused at how a single action, solid frame, no ejection device whatsoever revolver is considered a good ccw. I have a 32 long that functions the same way and it's only fun for the first cylinder lol.

Only if you stand on the inside of the barn with the door closed; then you can the board side of the barn.

                              Works for me every time.

                              Best regards,
