22lr is a great firearm starter cartridge - relatively cheap, available, makes a real bang (as opposed to air rifle), non-reloadable=no hassle picking up spent brass, and can be shot all day with no bruises, burns or other flinch-inducing first impressions.
Buckmark's on-roster, readily available, relatively inexpensive, well-supported, sturdy, reliable, and friendly/easy to operate.

Our range has a door-separated rim-fire area, so .22lr is even that much friendlier to new shooters & the noise-sensitive.

Despite the low entry cost, a Buckmark would be a solid, long-term "introducing a newbie" tool, long after your daughter has graduated to bigger thumps. In time, perhaps she'll even borrow it to introduce some of her friends to the sport.

I agree. Very comfortable in the hand, full grip fits the hand well. Lightweight, inexpensive, eight shot, very accurate.

The hammer and trigger springs are a bit strong and is my only complaint. Being double action, the swing-out cylinder is easy to load and unload. Also easy to visually check for being empty and safe.

Wife got one a couple Xmas' ago. Fine for what it is, but I wasn't impressed with it's accuracy. Her fixed sight snubs shoot as well though the LCRX is easier to sight.

Do you homework. Forget a Buckmark and Ruger if you plan on cleaning them. You want to get her involved with cleaning them after she shoots. My first, and now it's Calamity's 22lr pistol, after building a spreadsheet for a month or so, was hands down a Ruger SR 22 for semi, or a Ruger Single ten for a revolver. Easy to shoot, shoots all ammo, and easy to take apart and clean. This was 6-7 years ago, but I have seen nothing recent that would change my mind, except, maybe the S&W Victory.

Ruger SR22, off roster, but they turn up from time to time, albeit at a premium. You won't regret paying the extra, IMO.

I consider myself a plinkster in the sense that I have 22lr and 22 wmr in several different varieties. I started my kids and wife out in the Ruger LCR with 22 short in it.

They thought it was great because zero recoil and it barely made any noise compared to my rifles. they worked up to the 22lr. Once they were comfortable with that out of the LCR it was on. The Sig 1911-22, Phoenix, Browning 1911 compact, GSG compact and the Buckmark.

Rifle wise they all started on the single shot youth bolt action. then I moved them to the Marlin 60 or the Savage 64, then GSG 16, and the AR15-22 once they were comfortable holding heavier rifles.

They also like the 22WMR out of the LCRx and the Ruger American.

I am glad I had all the rimfire for them to shoot. They now shoot all calibers up to 45 long colt in hand gun 22, 22WMR, 9mm, .357, 40 S&W, 45ACP and 45 LC.
They all shoot the rifles too .22lr, 22WMR, .223/5.56, 30-30,7.62x39, 7.62x51, 7.62x54r, .410, 20gauge and 12 gauge shotguns.

Had I not started them on the lil ole rimfire they ALL said they would not have enjoyed learning the sport and would have gave it up due to the sound, recoil and percussion of the firearms.

Kinda funny last trip out we put about 700/800 rounds of 22 down range out of 9 different firearms. Maybe 50 hand gun rounds mainly from the Desert Eagle chambered in 40 S&W and out of the rifle rounds 50 thru the AR we brought and 100 in the Mosin Nagant 7.62x54r.
They love to make a competition out of it and see how many "gong hits" out of 10 they get shooting side by side at the 8" steel at about 300 yards. They figure out the drop all on their own now even shooting iron sights out of the mosin......

A 1956 Llama Mini 1911 in .22 These things are ideal for a younger shooter..Nice quality and function flawlessly.

And one I just picked up..A Walther PPK/s in .22..Very nice little Pistol.

Hadn't visited the thread for a while, but ended up picking up a Ruger mark ii. Definitely some downsides re: reassembly but it's in nice condition and look forward to testing it out once it's out of jail. May pick up one of the marvel unit it's for a 1911 just for funsies as well.

Had it been purely for me it would have been the lcrx. But for learning I wanted to get something with an easier trigger. The nice thing is if the mark ii doesn't work out they aren't terrible to resell and I can always get something else.

The Mark IIs are a nice pistol. I bought my years ago, works great, now have 10 mags for it. Last time at Burro was hitting broken clay on the back berm over 100 yards freehand using Mini Mags. I have never taken it fully apart, just use Q tips and a snake for the barrel. Lots of fun, enjoy.

Got it out of jail, and scrounged up a couple thousand rounds, so just need to take it out for a function test before I get a chance to let her shoot it. I was initially apprehensive about the way you drop the mags on a mark ii, and considered getting the volquartsen frame to give a normal style mag release, but after handling it more I'm pretty ok with it.

Looking forward to trying it out!

Congrats on the MK II. I had 4 at one point and sold 2. Can easily clean the barrel with a bore snake and brush the feed ramp without taking the gun apart. I also take out the bolt without taking the upper off, because over time it can get loose.

The mag release is slow to access, but I'm not doing tactical reloads, so I kept mine stock.

Picked it up Thursday, and got it out to the range today. Fairly good results, with occasionally a few shots that were spread a bit fair. Turns out the front sight had come loose, my fault for being overly anxious to shoot it. Still it was perfect with minimags, and had decent results with browning bps 40 gr. There were a few rounds that ftf with the Browning, but those were rounds that had bullets that were seated way out of spec.

Disassembly was stiff, the pin on the mainspring needed to be tapped out the first time. Reassembly was... Better than I expected? Had some trouble with the hammer spur, but the brownells video was really helpful and got it back together in about 15-20 minutes with minimal extraneous cursing.

Overall I think it'll be great for my purpose, and it's a fun gun to shoot. Thanks for the advice from everyone!
