22 pistol recommendation

Hey folks,

I'm not much of a pistol guy, but my daughter wants to learn to shoot a pistol and getting her started with 357 seems like a bad idea so I figure it's as good an excuse to buy a couple new guns as any. I'm not in a rush, so I can wait around for the right gun, but I figure I'd get started looking now and turned to you all for advice.

I'll probably pick up a buckmark, but looking for options for a second pistol of some sort that don't involve praying something comes up on the marketplace. I don't like double action triggers on autoloaders, want adjustable sights, not really interested in a single action revolver, and don't want to replace springs for a decent trigger on a double action so most of those are probably out.

A tx-22 looks fun, but california. So I'm hoping you folks have some interesting suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Buckmark is your best semiauto bet for something on roster and not too expensive.
Keep your eye out in the Market for a Ruger Mark II or III.

You could consider shooting .38 out of your .357.

If you think she can handle 9mm, consider a metal CZ or maybe a Glock 17 or 34.

Ruger lcrx 22lr 3" barrel is a great little gun. I also really like the GSG 922.

You certainly can't go wrong with a Buckmark. I own 2 and both are very accurate and reliable. There are a bunch of variation from the Camper (least expensive) to the Contour with a tons of variations. The older version was called a Challenger. The nice thing about Buckmarks is there are tons of aftermarket options to make the pistol your own unique model.

A Ruger may be a little tougher and more expensive to find. Since they are off-roster most people want a premium for them. If I had to choose (today) between the Ruger MK?? and a Buckmark, I would go with a Buckmark just based on price. I have a MkI Target and a MkIII Target and both are tack drivers. Rugers also have tons of aftermarket support.

The GSG 1911 is a great option and one that will get her used to a full size 1911, but don't get sucked into over paying for one. They should only be $250-$300 new. They tend to like higher velocity rounds and the slide is made from aluminum. The slide stop tends to start cutting into the slide right away. The one I have has been very reliable and accurate.

If you have a Glock 17, 19 or 34 you can always buy a conversion kit for it. I have one on my 17/34 and it shoots really nice. It's not that expensive and it will get her used to shooting a f/s Glock. I love to plink with it.

There are also conversion kits for the CZ SP01 but overall the cost will be more than with the Glock combo. It is called a Kadet adapter II. These are extremely well made and shoot very reliably with just about any ammo. I have this one also and I love it. (the same kit will also fit the PO-1 if you want a smaller frame. The only difference is the slide stop. The kit may or may not come with both slide stops, but if you call CZ and tell them you want a slide stop for a PO-1, they will send it to you free of charge.)

Browning makes an 85% 1911 in 22 that is absolutely beautiful but a little more expensive. I don't own one (maybe some day) but have shot one and it was really nice.

Lastly, keep an eye out for used Smith and Wesson models. There are many models including the Victory, SW22, 22A, 22A-1, 422, M&P22 and the king of them all the Model 41, just to name a few. I have a 22A-1 and a Model 41. The 22A-1 is a fine shooter and relatively inexpensive, light weight and will accept optics.

Thanks for the invite tunabliss, unfortunately I'm in norcal but hopefully someone else will see who is looking to get their children/grandchildren into the sport.

How is the trigger on the lcrx georgemg? I've wanted one in 357 for a while, and that could scratch that itch.

I'll definitely consider the gsg or browning 1911s, fixed sights on both I think though? Not necessarily a deal breaker, but makes me less enthused. With getting ammo the way it is, trying to find a load that's reasonably close to poa makes and then trying to find the same thing again...

And want to work her up to 38s. 38s aren't much, but she's a bit nervous about shooting and just the noise factor alone makes me want to keep it super mild at the start. Plus it's an excuse to buy new guns lol.

Got a Buck Mark Camper for exactly that purpose, I also find shooting it a lot of fun. Definitely a good training tool, may not teach great trigger control - especially if you later plan to move them to a striker pistol or revolver w DA. Recoil is absolutely minimal with SV 22 ammo, but even with HV is not much though a bit more noise.

Buck Mark's seem to be easier to find and affordable, seem reliable. Maintenance is easy as well if you just do a quick cleaning without breaking it down (not recommended for most). I just use a brush, bore snake and then wipe down and lube it up.

My GSG 1911 came with 4 extra front sights to change the elevation but I found it wasn't needed.

The Walther P22 is another that is available here. I have a couple of them and I haven't had any issues (I have read others have). They are small in the grip so might be good for young people.

If you go to a range, it won't matter how much noise her gun makes. There will be a dozen people there with very noisy guns.

Last I knew there were no decent sights for the Browning 1911. I wanted to love it, but they took crappy GI sights and made them smaller.
