    Yup...

That shot that killed him was a .22 I think lr that came from a scoped rifle around 390 feet away.

Maybe I`m paranoid but if I have to ever shoot my neighbors dog I sure as hell don't want to wound it, piss it off, and send it home!!

      Shoot, kill, bury.
****ty thing to do, but hey... dog should be on a leash and/or watched/controlled at all times.

City folk keep in mind that "neighbor" is used very LOOSELY. Neighbor to country folk can be the guy next door which is 1/4 mile away or it could be the guy 5 miles down and 2 roads over....
I believe that Scarecrow Repair has a makeshift range in back of his house. I highly doubt he lives in the city. Now, I have shot my neighbor's dog before! It had even sired my pup. I did not want to but, the dogs kept packing up and causing problem. It was getting dangerous to walk 200 yards up into the canyon. Yea, when people let their dogs run free in the "country," they know the risks and they only have themselves to blame if thier dog ends up dead. To set the record straight, I did not want to shoot any dog and I spent a few weeks trying to solve the problem any other way I could think of. Finally, after the local Sheriff's dept, DFG and the county animal control had all told me that there was nothing that they could do and "people who live out there have their own ways of taking care of problems like that," I took the hint and stopped the threat to myself and the others who lived on the same property with me.

If I owned a paintball marker back in '89, I would have tried that before I used lethal force on the dogs. In most cases, it's not the animals fault that it is causing a problem and I hate seeing a mistreated/neglected dog having to pay for it's owner's negligence. Paintball markers may be the best solution!

I watched an animal control officer dump 2-10 round mags of 22lr into a rot once. ALL were body shots and frankly, she should have known better than to think that it would kill it quickly. We opted to use a 870 12 guage with 00 buck in the end. That's what we SHOULD have started out with...

I also watched in horror as a put bull latched onto a CHP officers leg. We fired over 8 rounds of mixed 40S&W and 45ACP into that dog, and the dam thing lived... No head shots though as the dog was clamped onto the officer. It gave up but we had to use a pry bar to get it off of the officers leg. He was out for most of the year and eventually went out on a medical.

Dogs can be tough little mothers if you don't hit them in the right spot.

              Stop ***-u-me-ing.

My nearest neighbor is 1000 feet away and has twice called the sheriff for me shooting "full auto", once for a Mauser, the other for a Glock. They think he's a grumpy old man, but say they have to investigate.

When city slickers come up here and let their home-fed dogs loose to run in a pack, they are no longer house dogs, but wolves. However, unless they are actually attacking, I prefer to send a warning to wise up the city slickers so they won't do it again rather than have them think a mountain lion got their dog or someone stole it. One way they learn a lesson, one way they don't. A missing dog leaves a mystery lesson, and I want to send back a strong specific lesson.

                  Scarecrow Repair,

1000 ft to your nearest neighbor? I guess you live in a more city like enviornment than I thought. Anything less than 1 mile between houses is crowded to me. Yea, I know, right now I live in town. What can I do?

Yeh, next is 1400, third is half a mile and half the mountain.

The 1000 footer is closer to other people shooting, but I'm the only one in my direction so I'm the only one he can call the cops on. Fortunately for him, the mountain backstop is up the hill and also away from him, so that noise is less than it could be. Unfortunately for him, the gully with the hanging scuba tanks is on the side and funnels noise directly to him. Fortunately for him, the most fun with the scuba tanks is the CB Long quiet stuff so I can hear the ping. Unfortunately for him, trying to get 8 of 8 with the Garand as fast as possible is fun too and is best verified visually.

                    Sucks to be him.

Get a lever action rifle and call it a day. Don't try and shoot something thats not likely going to kill it on the first try. You don't need a cannon, but seriously, something a little bigger.

Shot placement is always key! I've seen deer suffer after being shot multiple times with a 30-06 and I've seen deer drop in their tracks when hit with one well placed shot. As far as needing a cannon is concerned, there's one in my driveway and I'd love to shot my wife's ankle bitter from it. It's only a 3" bore but, he's a little pom so, I think I could stuff him down the tube. Lucky for him, she took him with her when she moved out. Again, I am speaking from experience when I say that a .22lr can drop a dog at 75 yards without any problems.

I've witnessed what a Winchester .22 short hollow point did to a German Shepherd's heart at 25 yards. The dog ran 35 yards and piled up dead. No blood. Shot placement is everything.

(Please note that the loose dog had attacked an elderly woman earlier in the day.)

Try a hunk of hamburger with rat poison in it. They eat it a go die elsewhere. Much less messy and the neighbors will never know! Worked for me.

Good lord man you're sick. Just shoot it humanely. Shotgun with 00 buck or a larger caliber.

There is no humane way to shoot a large running dog with a .22 LR.
