Thats what I keep saying, "get a larger caliber or lever rifle!!!" I am not saying go .22lr because its just not enough. Sure it'll kill a man at 900 feet, sure it could take down a dog, man, deer, maybe elk with shot placement, but it isn't the right tool for the job. Just get a small caliber rifle like a .223, .243, or something similar and nail it or get a lever .357 or .44mag. Don't shoot a dog no matter how small with a .22lr for the sake of the dog and owner.

.22 vs dog?

His neighbors may not appreciate a 00 12ga. blast and flying fence boards. What .22 round (if any) would be adequate for taking down the average stray dog. I live in the country and in a shoot zone so it is totally legal to do so. I have had a couple dogs in my back yard chasing my cats. Of course I would like to use a larger caliber but I do have neighbors within range so I worry about that. So do you guys think .22 would be enough or would it not?
I have regular, HP, jacketed, and CB longs
. Thanks.

It didn't sound like his neighbors lived that close though that they would notice a shotgun. Maybe the noise, but not the scatter from it. Maybe go with #4 shot instead. Anyway, you get the idea. Just don't shoot it with a .22Comment

Hell the way I shoot with a shotgun ,I would probably miss the dogs and kill the cats."You can't handle the truth"Comment

Have you thought about bear spray?
If you have to shoot it, put it down with a shotgun. If you're in a legal shoot zone then noise shouldn't be a factor. It isn't like you're firing off a bunch of rounds. A .22 miss will travel a hell of a lot farther than some 00 buck. Rifled rounds tend to fly much further than shot. A .22 lr will max out around 1.5 miles. 00 buck will max out around 2,000 feet at sea level. They'll go farther at higher elevations.
Which would bug the neighbors more the sound of a shotgun blast, or a broken window from a stray round? This also depends on how close the nearest neighbor lives. There are laws regarding shooting firearms within 150 yards of a man made structure, unless it is for self defense. This applies mainly to hunters. I'd just hate to see you get jammed up over something this lame. Perhaps you should ask the local Animal Control for some advice on how you can deal with the problem. They might have an answer that doesn't involve a firearm.

Did not read the 5 pages of responses, but if you are worried about a stray round getting to the neighbors, I vote for 12 GA 00 buck. The 22 is probably not up to the task of a quick clean kill as a buddy of mine found out on a shoot at point blank range with a 22 on a stray. Lots of howling and lots of shots to finish the job. Then there is archery...Just sayin.sigpicThe right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The original common sense gun law...Comment
