.22 vs dog?

I'm a dog fan, but I understand your situation. You have a right to protect your property, yourself, and your pets of course. Chase 'em off if possible. If not, well, you gots to do what you gots to do. .22lr well placed should be fine. Stingers/Mini-mags would be best if it has to be .22lr.
^^^ Do be careful though, if you shot my dog I'd be pissed. You don't need some reckless drunk coming over wanting blood for blood. Even if he's out of line, he'd be a problem you don't want to deal with.Comment

I live in a rural area and I have had to dispatch a few marauding canines. A .22LR will work fine, and is in fact a local favorite. A CCI Stinger or some other high-powered .22 is a good idea, but just about and .22 will do the job. Just about every home around here has a loaded .22 at the ready, and we ain't afraid to use them!Comment

You need a special barrel for the 60gr .22lr to shoot well. It keyholes when shot out of anything I've tried it in.Originally posted by X-LiberalIf you are concerned about too much noise use a 60gr subsonic, head or boileroom shot will take them down. Maybe you could use a box trap on them whack em with shorts or subs from a rifle that would be real quite.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

In my experience, a spring piston air rifle is just powerful enough to injure, yet lacks the stopping force of even a .22 short and is louder.
Good for small feathered pests, not so much the 4-legged ones. If scattering is the goal, a rock or baseball sends a much clearer message.
I've got a rescue shelter/ranch across the street from me, which means people from miles around drop their unwanted/caught stray animals in my neighborhood. Unfortunately I've had to deal with dozens upon dozens of these animals displaying varying degrees of aggressiveness, disease, etc.. Whenever possible I try and deliver them to the shelter, but then there's the occasional 4 pitbulls that decide your german shepherd should be their prison *****.
To quote Bob Barker, [unless you're a responsible pet owner], PLEASE spay and neuter your pets!!
Or I may be forced to shoot them & their offspring.Last edited by SB643; 05-31-2009, 11:18 PM.Comment

If you are not worried about the dogs attacking you, but only want them to go away and want the owners to keep them tied up or inside, consider a paintball gun with bright green paint. Any owner who doesn't understand that message doesn't deserve any sympathy.Mention the Deacons for Defense and Justice and make both left and right wingnuts squirmComment

Sounds like you live in the city... even if you have a reason/legal/right to take down a guys dog it doesn't mean he won't be pissed off and shoot yours with a REAL BULLET and kill it.
Maybe I`m paranoid but if I have to ever shoot my neighbors dog I sure as hell don't want to wound it, piss it off, and send it home!!
Shoot, kill, bury.
****ty thing to do, but hey... dog should be on a leash and/or watched/controlled at all times.
City folk keep in mind that "neighbor" is used very LOOSELY. Neighbor to country folk can be the guy next door which is 1/4 mile away or it could be the guy 5 miles down and 2 roads over....Comment

If noise is not an issue...
I would use the .22 mag. It is a pretty good killer up close.
If not, I would stick with the Stingers, etc. Dogs can be very tough to kill and although I am all for you protecting your property you still should try and kill the dogs as quickly as possible.
A good 10/22 is hard to beat!
