UPDATE post # 44: Aguila .22 ammo, I'm having problems

Is anybody able to get Aguila .22 ammo to run in their S&W 617 revolver?

I'm at 100% ignition with Federal Auto Match, and 50% with Aguila.

Same in my 10/22.

Had problems with Aguila Super extra in a BL22 20 years ago, every 3rd round didn't fire on the first strike. Super Colonel ran fine though.

Pistols and revolvers don't have robust ignition systems, so ammunition with relatively insensitive priming compound will have misfires. I guess your lot of Aquila has this issue. And there is not much you can do about it.

One thing, if your pistol has an old mainspring, replace it. That can help. But if the thing is less than five years old and having misfires, its the ammunition.

Never had an issue with that brand.

Some 22 is made poorly
No enough priming compound

You can attempt to fire them a second time to see if it is not a hard strike

You can also rotate them 30-180 degrees and try one more time



If 22 gets banged around, the priming compound can slip out from under the rim


Pull a bullet and dump it out. Is there something besides powder when you dump it on a plate.

I have had more problems with Winchester 22lr than Aguila rimfire ammo. I had several boxes of Dynapoint Long Rifle that i returned to Winchester about 8 years ago because I was getting 60 to 70 Percent failure to fire with it. This was during the time of the 22lr scarcity so I hated to return the ammo, but it was terrible. Winchester sent me some coupons that I could use to replace the ammo at an authorized dealer. They told me that it was indeed defective.

Runnin Aguila Super Extra in my 10/22 and Buck Mark. Not had any issues with it, runs fine in both.

No, it's backed out as far as I could go, and still get reliable ignition with Federal Auto Match.

I'm 99.44 percent certain that's your problem.

Backing out the strain screw is called the po' boy's trigger job.

If it duds in 2 different firearms it's usually the ammo. Aguila is good ammo and I run a lot of it and like other brands, I occasionally get a dud out of 22lr du jour. OP may have a bad box/carton/lot.

I've had some problems with Aguila Super Extra HV not always firing in my Savage Mkii but it seems to work just fine in Marlin 60, a Winchester 30 and a CZ 427.

Usually turning the round 90 degrees in the magazine solves the problem.
