Kimber 1911 Conversion Plus New Frame?

I recently bought the Kimber conversion kit for my Custom II. I'm already thinking of putting it on a dedicated frame. What are my options as a CA resident?

Easiest is buy a cheap complete 1911 you want to change the slide off of. Then you have a slide you can sell and recoup some of the expense along with having a gun you can transfer if you decide to later.

I think you can via ppt but not new due to the roster applying. But finding an FFL that will transfer a frame only could be difficult. Due to the safe handling requirements. There are ways to deal with that legally but a lot do not want to mess with it. And 80% which will be your next question is too much of a grey area and has many more hurdles. Its not even close to worth the time.

I’m in the same boat you are, all my research has led me to just buying a new gun that I’m willing to take apart. Like a Rock Island or something.

You have 3 options to buy a frame only.

1. Do a PPT for a frame only.
2. Find a dealer that will sell you an ON roster 1911 of your choice and buy back the parts you don't want.
3. Buy a 1911 of your choice by any means possible and sell the parts that you don't want.

The problem with the first option is that most frames you'll find will be of high quality from a boutique manufacture with a price tag to match.

The problem with the second option is finding that FFL who will buy back the parts from you.

The third option is really the best option if you want to keep the conversion you just bought.

Though when you start to look around at the prices you will probably just change your mind on the whole project. Because you will probably only get $200 out of a Rock slide and barrel assembly. Others will probably get you more but of course that also means that you paid more for the gun to begin with.

Now, with all that said what you may want to consider is selling the conversion to someone who really wants it and buying one of the ATI full size 1911's in 22lr. I don't have one but I have heard pretty good things about them. Though they are lighter they will give you the basic fill of a 1911 for training at a much lower price.

I appreciate the advice! I was hoping to have a "secret" 1911 .22. Damn CA lol. I guess I'll keep switching slides for the time being, but I might give it its own frame in the future. Thanks again.
