Wow - I had forgotten all about this thread. Here is a picture of the rifle and two groups I shot at 50 yards. One is before tuning to the specific load and one is after tuning. Not the best I have shot but representative.

I bought one of the CMP 40x receiver/bolt sets and found an original stock.
I also picked up a Krieger 1:15 twist ratchet rifled blanks.
One of these days, I'll get around to chambering and threading it and putting the gun all together.Randall Rausch

I don't even want to think about how many of those projects I have.
I call them my retirement projects.
I'll hopefully have time to get around to them then.Randall Rausch

Nice looking Remington, CH. Is that a Harrell tuner?
Great groups. Are those 10 shot groups?...a fool and his money were lucky to get together in the first place...Comment

Yes. And no. The early 40X's were based on the 722 action and share the same profile at the tang, which is one of the differences from the later 700. Because of the swept bolt handle, yours looks to be a later, 700 style receiver with the safety cut out. 722's are round underneath and the safety of a 700 will need to be bent to match for clearance. Otherwise the only real difference is the bolt stop spring.
I put a Jewell on mine.Comment

Yes, it is a Harrell tuner. They are 5-shot groups. I used to shoot ARA matches at my club, and you shoot one round at each bullseye on a sheet of several bullseyes, so you have to slightly move the rifle for each shot. The score is then added up. Those were a 50 yard match.
We also shot a sandbag match at 50 yards, which varied each month. Some months it was several flies, another time it could be pictures of candle flames, small stars, etc. Maximum points were for the hole completely within the outline of whatever the target was.Comment

I continue to shoot the Remington 40X in a weekly bench match. We alternate 50y and 100y matches and this is my 100y rifle. The targets have been shrunk to make the scoring easier...5 shots at 100 yards on each of 4 targets.

Recently shot a pretty good 5 shot group at the match'
