    Pipe over .22 barrel?

    Hi,
Is it legal to stick a .22 barrel, say a ruger 10/22, into a pipe that has a larger diameter than the barrel? The pipe would go all the way back to the receiver and extend about 10 inches from the tip of the barrel. Or, do I have to have a pipe that is the same diameter of the inside of the barrel?

I can not think of any reason you could not do that on a long gun. It would be illegal on a pistol as I think it would count as a barrel shroud/heat shield.

the purpose is to give a look of a longer, untapered barrel. this will not be going on any kind of store-bought aftermarket ruger stock. It shouldn't count as a silencer right? And it shouldn't silence it right?

I think it would qualify as an improvised silencer. Yes I know that sounds ridiculous but any device "intended" to reduce the report of a weapon...

IMHO, the possible trouble is not worth the aesthetics.

I don't understand that. You could have >1db change just switching from a birdcage to a muzzle brake or to no muzzle device at all.

Mens rea is a requirement of any criminal charge. Let a cop try to arrest you as a felon for a useless pipe over the barrel of a rimfire rifle. Once whatever circuit court throws the conviction out, sue the dognuts out of the dept and state.

I have got no monies to support this.

                    Edit:
Would a DB meter be a good enough device to measure if the tube "silences"?

Why not just buy a bull barrel and leave the pipe at home.

It wouldn't be long enough, and the diameter is also too small to get the right look.

Besides making the gun longer, what are you trying to use it for? I think you can custom make barrels to be longer but your gonna have to find out. Try making a 32" 22LR. I wonder if the bullet will be lounged in it. hehe.

Just how big and how long do you want - you can get barrels up to about 1.25" diameter and 32" finished. What do you want a 22lr field piece.

It is for a mg42 clone, and I don't want to drop a alot of money just on the barrel. I am a student, and funds are limited.
