That's like asking "what's good" at one of those huge all you can eat buffets...
There are lots of options to configure and customize a 10/22 to taste. I have everything from "mostly" stock to barely recognizable in unusual bullpup stock from a guy in Idaho. All of them are fun to shoot. Also in the "herd" are a Takedown and a QBD stocked sample... those typically both go in a travel bag with a couple pistols.
Really depends on what your goals are, but the nice thing is that if you don't like one configuration, you can sell the parts on ebay and buy something different....
My personal likes are a 16" threaded barrel with a ultralight sound forwarder, a stock with a pistol grip, a lighter trigger, upgraded (Ruger 90598) or stock mag release to match the rest of the configuration, a UTX extended rail or NC see through pic riser, FO Firesights are handy sometimes, Trimag mag coupler if you don't have freedom week BX-25's....
I swear they give away those 10/22's to get you hooked!
Forgot to mention to do the auto bolt release mod....Last edited by DB>; 08-06-2020, 10:42 PM.Comment

My favorite current line 10/22 stock is the Ruger Modular Synthetic Stock. It has a grown up rifle feel that the clunky regular wood or toy-like regular synthetic stock doesn't have. Currently it is only available on three 10/22s and many RAR bolt action rifles.
The 10/22s are:
10/22 Takedown Lite Model 21133 w/ 16.12" lite barrel (+ 5 other color variants)
10/22 Takedown Model 21133 w/ 16.12" bull barrel
10/22 Compact Model 31114 w/ 16.12" sporter weight barrel
I love short rifles and these all have the 16" barrels but only the Compact has open sights. The sights are the upgraded Hi-Viz fiber optic sights which have a cleaner sight picture than the standard stamped steel sight. Personally I like the shorter compact butt stock but it is easy to buy the replaceable standard length butt stock. Or if you get one of the takedowns above, they come with two butt stocks. One with a regular comb and one with a monte-carlo comb. You would have an extra full length stock to use on the Compact. I went the other way and had the discontinued 10/22 2nd Amendment Edition which has this modular stock in a copper-mica color with a threaded 16" barrel and I bought the compact stock to put on it.
I also had the 10/22 Takedown Lite and the 10/22 Takedown with the Magpul X-22 Backpacker stock. I really liked both takedowns and the X-22 backpacker stock also. If you really want to have a takedown with open sights, the X-22 backpacker would be it because the others listed above are sightless. Both takedowns weren't as accurate as the fixed barrel 10/22 even though they were way more expensive.
If I had to buy another basic Ruger 10/22 right now it would be the Compact. If it didn't have to be a Ruger than the best 10/22 clone is the T/CR22 which is also great. I like the receiver, bolt and barrel better on the TCR but I like the stock better on the Ruger. Both of these have the low end covered.
I recently went in the other direction for myself and bought both the Ruger Custom Shop 10/22 and the T/CR22 Performance Center with the laminated thumbhole stocks. Both great guns but neither has open sights though.Last edited by pinger; 08-07-2020, 12:43 AM.Comment

Get MAGS! It's the only thing that HASN'T disappeared, but it's only a matter of time before they do too!

I opted for a non-takedown. It was $100 cheaper and I only need it for plinking - no need to put it in a backpack. I also had concerns about the accuracy of the takedown rifles. Doesn't matter with the iron sights, since they are attached to the barrel. But with the scope, any small difference in barrel alignment will impact the zero. As a machinist, I learned that nothing is exactly the same after you take it apart.Last edited by frigzy; 08-07-2020, 10:15 AM.Comment

Non-take down.
You're not taking it backpacking, right?Comment

If you go takedown, get the magpul backpacker stock, keeps the barrel attached in transit. 16" barrel with FO firesights, add the see through riser so you can mount an optic or red dot.
If you want to save money, go with the QBD stock to replace the stock on a new or used basic sighted model. Once adjusted, the lockup on the barrel is solid.Comment

Skip it. It's sort of a novelty unless you actually plan on breaking it down and hiking with it, or if you already have a few 10/22s.Link to my feedback: https://www.calguns.net/forum/market...ser-tradecraftComment

IF you get a takedown model and IF you ever move to a free state, Ruger makes an accessory forearm & barrel with an integral silencer. Plug and play, heh, heh, heh, heh.

In my personal opinion the take-down rifle is pretty much a gimmick that has no REAL function unless you absolutely need it to fit in the smallest possible space, like say a plane or boat. If the rifle is taken down, it's not usable until put together and costs a lot more. If I need a smaller 22 that's ready to go, I would fit one of the new Samson folding stocks (not yet available), a copy of the factory Mini 14 folding stock---expensive, yeah, but you only spend the money once...Comment

I do plan on moving, and suppressors will be one of the things I hope to get in debt with. Thanks for the tip.IF you get a takedown model and IF you ever move to a free state, Ruger makes an accessory forearm & barrel with an integral silencer. Plug and play, heh, heh, heh, heh.
