    rimfire revolver

I almost bought a single-six. That got me intrigued with the rimfire revolver. What are my choices besides ruger? I love ruger revolvers but am a new S&W fan. I know a lot of companies make rimfire guns. Any opinions on decent r/r's? Double action is good but single action is better. Any experience with Heritage SAs? I appreciate it, guys.

I don't know much about single actions but for a DA/SA revolver I recommend the Smith & Wesson Model 617. I have the ten shot version with a four inch bbl. Personally I'd prefer a six inch but it was a really good price...

I have a single six and enjoy it alot , I also have a cheap 22 made in italy by something like army fatagilio ??? When I buy my next 22 revolver I would like to find a S&W 617 6 shot (they also make a 10 shot) or if I could find a bargin on a Colt single action 22 that would make me real happy .

I agree on the 617. The 4" model

I have a Cimmaron Plinkerton single action. It is patterned after the colt saa. You can use colt wood grips on it and find a holster easily. I love it and for $150 it's a great deal. The heritage .22 sa revolvers I've seen have smaller grips that were not comfortable to hold. See what fits your hand. I got one so I could afford to shoot more...

Save for a S&W. My first revolver was a used three screw Ruger Single Six, purchased back in '86, I still have it today but rarely take out of the safe. My favorite is rimfire revolver is a S&W 63 followed closely by my 648.

If you want a single action .22 lr revolver, then the single six is a very worthy choice. I have one, and I enjoy shooting it, and many of the noobs that I use it to teach just love it. Having said that, if you have the funds and want a revolver that is double action and a serious shooter or trainer for further and larger caliber shooting, the S&W choices are, IMHO, simply the best. Single six makes a good outdoors plinking, carrying, companion type gun, S&W is a serious shooting piece.

                    S&W 617

Get a S&W 617 (4 or 6 inch, whichever you prefer) and you are set. It is a superb rimfire revolver. It's not cheap, but it is worth it. You should be able to get a used one for $500-600.

Then put a Wolff standard strength hammer spring in it and the double action improves significantly, very smooth.

I have a red dot on my 617 6" and it is a really nice target gun.

I learned to shoot DA using an older Taurus mod 94 w/ the crappiest trigger I've ever owned PERIOD. Last year, I found a S&W mod 17 that is everything the Taurus is not.

I got a 617 4" 10 shot a couple of weeks ago. There is really nothing else you could ask of this gun. The fit and finish is superb. Its size, heft, and action are amazing (though the wolf spring does help). It's 10 shot cylinder is a fun novelty AND convenient. Its balance and pointability is perfect.

It is the perfect gun really; an absolute joy to own and shoot.

I own several guns, including a few semi high end 1911s, and have never had as much fun with ANY of them as I am having with this one.

If you want the best .22 rimfire revolver, try to find either a pre-Model 17 Smith & Wesson K-22 Masterpiece or a Colt Officer's Model Match .22. You also might consider a Colt Diamondback in .22 rimfire. You also might consider a Dan Wesson .22 revolver. They are known for outstanding accuracy due to their tensioned barrels. You can also replace the barrel and shroud to vary the barrel configurations.

I have a 6 inch Model 17 that is a great shooter. It's also a perfect match for my Model 14 in .38 Special.

I realize that all of these guns are out of production, but none of the newer guns on the market have any appeal to me.

The Heritage Rough Rider is configured like a Ruger Single Six. Interchangable cylinders for 22LR and 22 Magnum. Prices start at $159. Today I pick up one I bought at Alquist Arms for $209 with beautiful handles, 3.5" barrel, etc. Great value. I think it has a lifetime warranty too, not sure.

                              Rimfire Revolvers:

Single-Action: Hands Down Ruger Single-Six Convertible. Find an old 3-screw if you can but the current versions are fine, just don't have the "3-clicks".(wouldn't even consider anything else)

Double-Action: Currently availablel S&W 617 or 317 (LWT) or better still find an older model K22. Colt Diamondback in 22lr also VERY nice (nolonger produced). For just kicking around there are the various Taurus/Rossi/Llama and H&R's that function but that's about it. I'm not knocking them, I still have an old H&R 929 that I kicked around with as a kid (how times have changed) but it's not refined in any shape or form (just keep it for sentimental reasons).
                              Luck favors the prepared.

The original battle plan did not survive initial contact with the enemy.
